Global Temperatures Negative in January: End Game to Climate Debate Kicks Off

As seen in the above graph, for month ending January 2011, UAH (University of Alabama in Huntsville) satellite data confirms that global average temperature anomalies stood at -0.01 C. From a high of 0.6 C in March last year, this is a whooping 0.6 C plunge in 10 months and a 0.2 C plunge in just one month. The trendline (blue) captures the rapidity of the global cooling trend. What Cancun Climate Meet cannot do even if they came up with a global treaty, natural climatic variations does it in a jiffy - erasing century’s net warming effortlessly.

Breaking: Indian Environment Ministry formally challenges Human induced Global Warming

Jairam Ramesh, India's dynamic Environment Minister has done it again. A paper published by his ministry termed UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)'s claim on human induced global warming, as highly exaggerated as the latter's impact is significantly reduced by Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) that is responsible for low cloud formation over earth in the last 150 years.

The paper's lead author was U R Rao, former chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was released by Jairam Ramesh himself. Analyzing the data between 1960 and 2005, Rao found that lesser GCRs were reaching the earth due to increase in solar magnetic field and thereby leading to increase in global warming. Says the paper:
“We conclude that the contribution to climate change due to the change in galactic cosmic ray intensity is quite significant and needs to be factored into the prediction of global warming and its effect on sea level raise and weather prediction.”
The real blow to the global warmist movement is when Jairam Ramesh defended climate scepticism and cautioned against foreign funded agendas of environmental organizations and NGOs like WWF, Greenpeace, Oxfam, Christian Aid, ActionAid  in the name of Climate Justice activism etc :
“There is a groupthink in climate science today. Anyone who raises alternative climate theories is immediately branded as a climate atheist in an atmosphere of climate evangelists,” he said. “Climate science is incredibly more complex than [developed countries] negotiators make it out to be… Climate science should not be driven by the West. We should not always be dependent on outside reports.”

“Global Warming” gets out of Control - Now creates “Global Cooling”

"We are told the earth continues to get warmer, yet it’s feeling a lot colder outside.”
And as it does, we may logically conclude so much for global warming and the prediction of snow’s extinction.  This probably led Dr Tim Ball, a respected climatologist to comment in his blog:
“Nasty old Mother Nature causes the demise by going about her normal business. As the old advertisement said, it’s not nice to fool with Mother Nature. The Northern Hemisphere winter is already proving once again that global warming is another undelivered government promise.”
Life apparently isn’t that straightforward.

Since 1998, the hottest year in recorded history, there is no statistically significant warming trend. And yet, none of the 24 models used by the IPCC view that as even possible.  Simply put, they are at odds with reality. So what do global warmists do? They precisely did what Albert Einstein warned about of science regressing into a religion whenever facts are changed to suit theory instead of the other way round. The result is, you guessed it - all this cooling is due to global warming! This led to Steven Goddard in his blog  to observe:
“No matter what the weather did or does, climate scientists blame it on global warming. Every event in nature is now seen as a sign of global warming. If it weren’t for CO2, the weather would be different and somehow better.”

Brrrr. Snow in New Delhi this winter - High Probability?

Last week, there was no let up in the cold conditions in New Delhi. The minimum temperature dropped further in the city to 4.7 degrees Celsius last Wednesday. This is in contrast to last year in December, were minimum temperatures touched only a low of 5.2 degrees during this month.

However, the all-time record for the lowest temperature December was registered in 1945, when it touched 1.1 degrees and that for January is -0.6 degrees recorded on January 16, 1935. In the recent past also near zero degree temperature (0.2 degree Celsius) was recorded on January 8, 2006 where Delhites woke-up surprised to see snow.

I’m dreaming of a White Christmas”: A Carol with Global Warmist Undertones

This has to be one of the most recognizable song lyrics out there during every Christmas season. White Christmas was actually written in 1940 by an Irving Berlin for the 1942 movie "Holiday Inn" starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire.

Songs often reflect the times. As seen from the graph, the period 1920-45 was a period the globe experienced warming at a scale matching those seen during 1977-2000. In fact the warmest year for USA remains 1934 and then only 1998 according to NASA data. A snow covered Christmas Day was a rarity then and Irving Berlin captured within the lyrics the nostalgia when snow was more common, perhaps explaining the sheer magnetism the song holds.

The planet undergoes a warm-cool oscillation on an average, every 25-30 years, correlating significantly with a climatic phenomenon called Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) as seen in the graph. Living almost in a quarter of a century within the same cycle will tend to prompt almost anybody to forget what it meant living in an opposite cycle.

As was the case of Irving Berlin in the 40s, it was also the same at turn of the millennium, wherein almost two decades of warming made most forget that a global cooling mode is next to come as part of earth’s natural climatic variability.  An article in the UK’s Independent newspaper with a dateline 20 March 2000 best illustrated this popular fallacy when it predicted snow will become extinct:
"According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become "a very rare and exciting event. Children just aren't going to know what snow is”

Cancun Climate "Deal: A Mirage of Progress

Not perfect, no treaty, not binding, fails to establish a firm date for negotiators to reach a conclusion on a new climate treaty, but a deal has been struck. The agreement says that developing countries will have to take "nationally appropriate actions" to curb their emissions by 2020. Hence, developing nations don't have to take targeted emission cuts like their developed counterparts. And the developed countries need not have any legally binding commitments.  A compromise to accommodate everyone (almost everyone, except for Bolvia)  ......The deal  made a grab for the lower hanging fruits and includes a Green Climate Fund that would give $133 billion a year in aid to poor nations by 2020, measures to protect tropical forests and ways to share clean energy technologies. These are sops to the developing countries for their part in the compromise. The only problem is that the details in operationalizing these measures are still not finalized.

Cancún hit by coldest ever December.

For several years now, we sceptics have bemusedly eyed a phenomenon known as “The Gore Effect”, in veneration of Global Warming’s High Priest and US ex-Vice President, Al Gore.  It describes almost a seemingly causal relationship of temperature decrease whenever global warming or when a global warming event is held. The Gore Effect" has rather a long and uniquely entertaining history. In simple terms, it strikes the warmists whenever and wherever they gather as if Mother Nature herself is mocking their climate hysteria.

Cancún has a tropical climate, specifically a tropical wet and dry climate with little temperature differences between seasons, but pronounced rainy seasons. The city is warm year-round, and moderated by onshore trade winds, with an annual mean temperature of 27.1 °C (80.8 °F). This placed the odds stacked heavily against a Gore Effect strike Cancun. And yet, it didn’t fail us. For six consecutive days during the Cancun Meet, temperatures hit a 100 year low!

Coldest Winter in 100 Years, Europe Shivers

Winter Dec to Feb inclusive in Britain and Europe will be exceptionally cold and snowy – like hell frozen over at times - with much of England, Germany, Benelux and N France suffering one of the coldest winters for over 100 years. It is expected that two of the three months Dec, Jan & Feb are likely to be in the three coldest for a 100 years (eg using Central England Temperatures).

This is Piers Corbyn, of Weather Action who predicted Copenhagen would be deluged by snow during the Climate meet last year. This time, he predicts one of the harshest winters in recent times for whole of Europe. Read more here.

Meanwhile, Europe is getting a feel of what winter may look like this week. Temperatures dropped to as low as minus 18 degrees Celsius in some parts of Germany, while driving rain in Italy triggered the collapse of two Roman walls in Pompeii and flooding in Venice. Britain, shivering in the earliest widespread snowfalls of winter since 1993, was one of the countries worst affected with two of its major transport hubs scrapping all flights.

Will New Delhi follow by going sub-zero this winter?

COP 16 Cancun Climate Meet: What a difference a year can make!

Last year at COP 15, UNFCCC meet in Copenhagen, the mood of climate activists at were not only upbeat but belligerent. The campaign for a successor treaty to the Kyoto protocol began as much as six months in advance. Spurred on with funds and encouragement from sponsors, climate activists in thousands booked all jumbo jets and hotels to attend the event so much so that air-fares sky-rocketed and hotels booked to their brim. The world media joined the chorus and delivered a massive coverage.

A series of meetings in Germany, Korea and China to the run-up of Cancun proved inconclusive. The UNFCCC is under severe pressure to jump start the treaty process in Mexico, however, public doubts about climate science and policy coupled with an inability of developed and developing nations to find common ground leave the UNFCCC with a daunting task ahead.

Accordingly, the mood of climate alarmists going into Cancun is visibly downbeat. The world suffers from apocalyptic fatigue and scepticism so much even they know too well their usual doomsday soothsaying are now met with derisive laughter. With public support cultivated over the last decade or so has largely evaporated, the lack of confidence reflects itself in the run-up to Cancun. So unlike Copenhagen, this time it had been a rather quiet and more sombre affair.

Today is Climate Fools Day. Celebrate it!

"The climate has gone up and down for billions of years.
It’s been much hotter and much colder.
The temperature has gone up and down slower and faster.
There has been much more and much less CO2 in the atmosphere.
Other planets in the solar system are changing at the same rate as earth.

Why is it any different now?

Future generations will wonder in bemused amazement that the early 21st century’s developed world went into hysterical panic over a globally averaged temperature increase of a few tenths of a degree, and, on the basis of gross exaggerations of highly uncertain computer projections combined into implausible chains of inference, proceeded to contemplate a roll-back of the industrial age.”

This is a quote from Dr. Richard Lindzen. He is one of the world’s most respected climatologists, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology Professor of Atmospheric Science.

Global warming hysteria is on the retreat. Each October 26th is celebrated as a day of remembrance that the fight against pseudo-science must go on, and we must be ever vigilant.

On this occasion, we bring you this excellent posting by Anthony Watts - "Today is Climate Fools Day."

Update: Mount Merapi Volcano Finally Erupts

UPDATE
Finally Mount Merapi erupted at 5.02pm (local time) Tuesday sending clouds of ash as high as 1,500 and spewed clouds of hot ash, causing burn injuries to at least 13 people. Three explosions around 1800 (1100 GMT) spewing volcanic material as high as 1.5km (one mile) and sending heat clouds down the slopes.

Television visuals showed fallen ash from the volcano as far away as 15km at evacuation centres. The peak of Mount Merapi was clouded with smoke making it impossible to see if lava was spewing out, but that ash had started raining down on frightened residents.

"This is an initial phase of an eruption," Subandrio, head of the Volcanic Technology Development and Research Centre in Yogyakarta was quoted by the media. There are fears that the current activity could foreshadow a much more destructive explosion in the coming weeks or months, though it is possible, too, that the volcano will settle back down after a slow, long period of letting off steam.

Government vulcanologist Surono commented: "Today's eruption released heat clouds of gas and ash down the slopes for about two hours. We cannot tell you how far the searing clouds went down on the slopes because it's dark. 7.5 million cubic meters of volcanic material was the remnants from the 1911 eruption and prone to collapse under magma pressure. If the 1911 dome is pushed by magma, the domes created during the 1997 and 2006 eruptions will also collapse.”

A three-month-old baby died after experiencing respiratory problems after Indonesia's most volatile volcano Mount Merapi. Private MetroTV reported that another baby died when a mother ran in panic after the eruption started. Its report cited a local doctor and showed the mother weeping as the baby was covered with white blanket at a hospital. These two babies are among 19 officially admitted dead. One rescuer, Christian Awuy, told the BBC that he feared up to 50 could have been killed.

Mount Merapi - Threatening to Erupt.

Seismic activity has escalated dramatically in recent days at Mount Merapi with increasing lava spurts and about 500 volcanic earthquakes recorded over the weekend.

The mountain last erupted in 2006, when it sent an avalanche of blistering gases and rock fragments racing down the mountain that killed two people. In a 1994 eruption, 70 people were killed in an eruption when the volcano's lava dome collapsed. The volcano killed 1,300 people in 1930

Early winter: The signals of a La Nina Winter ???

UK is to be hit by an arctic blast, early this week, with minimum temperatures set to plunge -6C. Maximum temperatures meanwhile are likely to plummet to 7C. This is half the average for the time of year, but will feel more like 3C due to the effect of biting winds. Met Office forecaster Robin Downton was quoted by the Sun as saying, “It's fairly early on to be getting temperatures below freezing."

In India, by second week of September, the higher reaches of Garhwali Himalayas received snowfall, sending the mercury plummeting in Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts. The hills around Badrinath and Kedarnath temples also have received snowfall while lower areas received rainfall forcing the people to take out their woollens. The higher hills in Lahaul and Spiti, Chamba, Kinnaur and Kullu districts also experienced mild snowfall. Rohtang Pass, located at an altitude of 13,050 feet was clad in two to three inches of snow by mid- last month.

Now, the Monster of a La Nina Confirmation??

In the context of recent plunge of the MEI into strong La Nina conditions, what does a comparison figure with strong La Nina events that all reached at least minus one standard deviations by June-July, and a peak of at least -1.4 sigma over the course of an event show?

A monster La Nina underway!

Oops! New Peer Research says it is the Sun the driver of Climate

New data indicates that changes in the Sun's output of energy were a major factor in the global temperature increases seen in recent years. The research will be unwelcome among hardcore green activists, as it downplays the influence of human-driven carbon emissions.

They found that although the Sun was putting out less energy overall than usual, in line with observations showing decreased sunspot activity, it actually emitted more in the key visible-light and near-infrared wavelengths.

Climate Hysteria’s U-Turn: Beware Ice Age Cometh!

“If you look at all the natural cycles and natural forces starting from the smallest to the largest there is a current common denominator – cold ahead!”

This is what TWAWKI, a climate sceptic blog warned. They are not alone. NOAA, the US Climate agency has been warning its citizens to prepare for a possible brutal winter ahead as well and so are the likes of the Russians and Polish. In June of this year, the Bilderberg Meetings were held in Spain and world leaders, academicians, corporate innovators discussed, among other things, global cooling. Participants in this meeting are referred to as the world’s secret rulers - the axis between North American and Western European powers. They included, Henri Kissinger, the Queen of Netherlands and Bill Gates. The only reason why a group like Bilderberg would put global cooling on their agenda is unless they feel it would be a problem in the coming years. Meanwhile Polish climatologists warn of the worst winter in 1,000 years.

Apparently Global Warming is dead. Long live Ice Age! Climate hysteria has taken a sharp U-Turn. The trigger being the Gulfstream, part of the Ocean’s Conveyor Belt has broken down!

Strong La Nina: Bundle up, Monster Winter Ahead!

We had in one of our August postings (Read here) speculated on the possibility of a strong La Nina developing this year. Currently all La Nina indicators are pointing to a deep La Nina developing whose effects should last well into the early months of 2012. We now warn that for South Asia, the coming winter is likely to be one of the harshest experienced in recent times.

Climate Scam: NGO credibility hit a new low. The shame much worse than their Rwandan Genocide culpability

NGOs have moved from back stage to centre stage in world politics, and are exerting their power and influence in every aspect of international relations and policy making. They have in most part, been a positive force in domestic and international affairs. However, in recent times, various global Climate Justice Networks have popped up. These are platforms mainly constituted and controlled by Northern NGOs.

We as member of the NGO fraternity or general public seldom research their record of accomplishment; or ask awkward questions on northern NGOs policies; or chase facts behind their claims and publicity spin. One of the most basic questions as we dig deeper is what kind of credentials do these northern NGOs possess to champion justice issues. Simply put - are they committed to principles of justice as portrayed in their carefully cultivated public image?

If we go back to history, what we find is that they have a chequered past in terms of justice credentials. Rwandan Genocide until now had been regarded as the worst shame of NGO behaviour. This was genocide where an estimated 800,000 were massacred. The nineties saw NGOs soul-searching on such behaviour even as today NGO workers remain mentally scarred of experiences such as Rwanda. Apparently lessons have not been learnt as we find that through their climate advocacy they have not only repeating the mistakes of the past but the shame hit a new low.

10 tell tale signs that the global warming is a dying hoax.

Global warming hysteria, whose gravy train INGOs and environmental organizations jumped into for the last decade or so, has run its course. Climate alarmism is dying a slow and painful death. Here are some telltale signs that it is in its deathbed, grasping for its last breath:

1. Re-branding exercises

We live in this age of advertisement where if something isn't working, the first remedy is often to change the offending name. Repeated attempts to re-brand global warming are one of these. Global warming first metamorphosed as “climate change”. This worked for some years but such was the gross misuse and abuse of the term that the public soon developed allergic to this term too and thus the desperate search for an alternative term in the last few months. Some alternatives recently floated are “climate weirdness” and “climate disruption “, the last coined by President Obama’s Science Czar John Holdren.

Now a Climate Scientist Register - You Too Can register if Qualified

A common misunderstanding amongst the general public, mainstream media and politicians is that only a small proportion of experts in the climate science community have serious problems with the concept of a carbon dioxide-driven climate crisis. In reality, thousands of climate experts are highly skeptical of this hypothesis.

Consequently, International Climate Science Coalition (ICSC) have incorporated the following characteristics into The Climate Scientists' Register for the public to address this problem. The Register states:

“We, the undersigned, having assessed the relevant scientific evidence, do not find convincing support for the hypothesis that human emissions of carbon dioxide are causing, or will in the foreseeable future cause, dangerous global warming."

So far endorsers are from that nation: Algéria (1 ), Australia (8),  Bulgaria (1), Canada (14), Denmark (1), Estonia (1), Finland (1), France (1), Germany (4), India (3), Italy (3), Luxembourg (1), Mexico (1), New Zealand (6), Norway (4), Poland (3), Russia (5), South Africa (1), Sweden (8), United Kingdom (6), United States of America (64).
