The low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal is sort of "blowing hot and blowing cold". From showing no signs of deepening on Wednesday, it suddenly became 99B on Thursday, raising hopes of becoming "well marked".(Sounds familiar, heard this before :))
In sympathy, the western trough off the coast suddenly shot into action, and precipitated heavy rains along the Konkan/Goa coast on Thursday (24th.), wiping out the fears of reducing rainfall there due to the "break Monsoon" scare. And, the monsoon axis, as if in obeyance, has retreated its threatening stand, by forming a core of 992 mb far away from the Indian land mass,deep into the Sindh desert. The correct place for the western end of a typical axis.
The low in the bay is likely to become ‘well marked' soon.That's the repeated expectation since the last 24hrs,but as and when it does, it should travel west into India, and merge into a W.D. approaching from the northwest, and set up rains over the Gangetic plains, and rain in some places in the North, bringing some respite from the severe heat.
But as estimated, the interiors of the peninsula region are relatively drier. Rainfall figures of interior Maharashtra and peninsula cities are still wanting, and rains are badly needed there. And may remain so for the next 2/3 days.
Mumbai has got more than its a fair share of drenching. With Colaba recieving 210 mms of rain in the last 24 hrs, ended Friday morning, the June total has leaped to 909 mms. Now thats a whopping 495 mms above the noraml, or +54%, for this time of the year. The all time high for June is 1280 mms.
But the all India average is -11%, a big improvement from last year, after the disastrous 54 per cent deficit recorded up to June 25 last season. The year 2009 had witnessed the worst drought in three decades.
The +ve regions are the areas where the monsoon has not yet arrived. Like Rajasthan, with+214%. But mainly due to the interaction of the remant of Phet with a W.D. over the region. -ve is in the East.
One of our readers has rightly commented today, that Mumbai is recieving very good rains in spite of no system or active MJO, either from the bay or the Arabian Sea. Defying forecasts, the off shore trough along the west coast, a permanent feature during the monsoon, has shown "its strenght" in the last 4 days and produced very good rainfall along the Konkan and specially off the Mumbai coast.
You see, the trough has been "going on and off" very frequently. It formed a embedded vortex, which suddenly disappeared, without crossing the coast. But still precipitated rains off the Mumbai area (see previous blog). Now today, its Northern end has abruptly moved North to the Saurashtra coast. While observing the trough. I had judged about 100 mms of rain for Mumbai Thursday/Friday, but Thursday itself brought 210mms in Colaba, but 120 mms in the suburbs.Sporadic and differentiating.Santa Cruz total till today is 643 mms !
Ahead,I see the rains lessening a bit in Mumbai during the weekend, only to pick up slightly from Monday.
Further Monsoon movement will depend on the behaviour of the low in the bay. Dont see much prospects of the low picking up till Monday.Hence, rainfall in the interiors of Maharashtra, Karnatak,and eastern plains of Northern India will be restricted. But rainfall can be expected, next 2 days,in Chattisgarh and Eastern M.P. due to the weak low persisting.
Do not see rains advancing much into Saurashtra too.

Light Drizzle was observed at 0100UTC (0630 IST) with associated visibility 4000 Metes. 1 MM rain was recorded since evening of 21st May to 0300 UTC ( 0830 IST) of 22nd May 2010.

Rain to continue in North-East, Orissa
Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall has been reported from the north-eastern States and the southern peninsula overnight on Tuesday.
The causative north-south trough ran down from east Uttar Pradesh to north interior Karnataka across Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha with embedded upper air cyclonic circulations over east Uttar Pradesh.
SQUALL WARNING
A warning issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD) and valid for the next two days said that isolated thunder squalls would occur over the north-eastern States, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar and Orissa.
According to the US National Centres for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), the northeast would be awash with moisture from the Bay of Bengal for as long as the second week of May.
The NCEP has suggested that convective available potential energy (CAPE) values, which indicate the possibility of unstable weather (thundershowers or thunderstorms), would stay elevated during this week over the west coast also.
While the CAPE values are shown sneaking into interior Bihar and east Uttar Pradesh in the east, a convective weather system (embedded cyclonic circulation in a western disturbance) would drive moisture into the Gujarat and southwest Rajasthan during the week.
The rest of the west coast will witness volatile weather during this period as will large parts of the southern peninsula, with moisture-laden winds from adjoining seas expected to blow into interior peninsula.
RAINS IN SOUTH
An update from the Chennai Met Centre said that rainfall occurred at most places over Kerala and at a few places over Telangana, coastal and south interior Karnataka during the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning.
Isolated rainfall occurred over Rayalaseema, Lakshadweep and Tamil Nadu while mainly dry weather prevailed over north interior Karnataka and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The forecast for the next two days said that rain or thundershowers may occur at many places over Kerala and Lakshadweep and at a few places over coastal and south interior Karnataka.
Isolated rain or thundershowers are likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh and north-interior Karnataka.
CYCLONIC CIRCULATION
As for north-west India, the region is bracing to receive some weather from an induced cyclonic circulation that is lying parked over central Pakistan and is expected to move further east.
The parent western disturbance is likely to affect the western Himalayan region during the next two to three days, the IMD said.
Satellite imagery on Tuesday morning showed the presence of convective (rain or thundershower-causing) clouds over parts of the Northeastern States, southeast Bay of Bengal and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Low to medium clouds (partly cloudy conditions) were seen over parts of the western Himalayan region, Punjab, Haryana, north Rajasthan, West Bengal, Sikkim, south peninsular India and southeast Arabian Sea.
Updated forecasts until Friday suggested the possibility of fairly widespread rain or thundershowers over Assam and Meghalaya and scattered rain over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
Extended forecasts until Sunday said that fairly widespread rainfall activity would occur over the Northeastern States while it would be isolated over east and south peninsular India.
Scattered rain or thundershowers are expected to occur over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh during next two days and isolated rain over Uttarkhand on Wednesday.
Isolated dust storms or thunderstorms are likely over Punjab, Haryana, north Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh during the next two days.
Meanwhile, heat wave conditions prevailed over parts of Himachal Pradesh and isolated pockets of north Rajasthan, Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal during the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning.
Maximum temperatures have begun to pick up over parts of northwest, central and east India. The highest maximum of 44.5 deg Celsius was recorded at Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan.
No significant change in maximum temperatures is expected over the plains of northwest, central and east India during next 24 hours but a slight fall make take place thereafter.

What is "TXLAPS".?? and something about monsoon - 2010
TXLAPS (Tropical eXtended Area Prediction System)
(A joint effort between Northern Territory Regional Office and NMOC) TXLAPS is a version of LAPS customised to describe the tropical atmosphere. In particular an attempt is made by Australian Weather Bureau to capture areas of convection that are observable as cloud formations on satellite imagery and which can lead to
the development of tropical depressions. In addition to available conventional data, input to the analysis includes bogus moisture values derived from satellite cloud imagery. Tropical Cyclones are incorporated into the analysis using a bogus system operated by Darwin RSMC staff. The first guess field for this analysis is a forecast from GASP. TXLAPS currently operates over the domain 48oN to 45oS and 60oE to 143oW with a grid spacing of 0.375o.

As SSET(one of our regular reader) asked the pictures depicts the wind pattern at specified level and the colors represents the speed in knots and the arrow head shows the direction of the flow.
However region specific data will be more useful and pronouncing.
It is too early and winds will be pseudo in nature. It has to be attested with other factors also. Any how it is pre monsoon period and the developments indicates that this year 2010 monsoon may be NORMAL.{But one has to be cautious in that also.)
Cross Equatorial Flow has not strengthened. ITCZ is below 5 Deg North and NOT pronounced in our region.

Top heat stays pinned down to East
The ‘trough triple' continues to bear typical pre-monsoon weather over the north-west, east and south while keeping the top heat pinned to the east and adjoining east-central India.
FRESH WESTERLY
Heat wave conditions prevailed over isolated pockets of Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Vidarbha, Telangana, north coastal Orissa and north Rajasthan.
The spike in mercury over north Rajasthan could be traced to the arrival phase of a fresh western disturbance, whose ‘hot head' up front induces incremental warming of the atmosphere.
Maximum temperatures may rise by 1 to 2 deg Celsius over parts of northwest and central India during the next two days and decrease thereafter from weather triggered by the westerly system.
The warming is caused by the rising motion of air in the westerly's front from a heated up surface. It cools down the air with gain in height and sets up weather in dust storms, rain or thundershowers during this time of the year.
No significant change is seen in day temperatures over east India during this period, an IMD outlook said.
TROUGH TRIPLE
Yesterday's trough triple were more or less traceable at their respective locations in the northwest, east and south of the country.
The most prominent among them is the north to south-aligned one running down from east Bihar to the extreme south of Tamil Nadu. It snaked down across Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, east Vidarbha, Telangana and interior Karnataka.
Additionally, it featured embedded upper air cyclonic circulations hanging in over east Bihar, east Andhra Pradesh and adjoining Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood.
Towards the northwest, an upper air cyclonic circulation induced by the inward movement of a western disturbance was traced to central Pakistan across the international border.
The eastward movement of the combine could bring it drifting into position over northwest India over the next few days.
The IMD has said in its outlook that a fresh western disturbance is likely to affect the western Himalayan region from Monday onwards. It could go on to affect the western Himalayan region over the next four days.
CONVECTIVE CLOUDS
Satellite imagery indicated the presence of convective clouds capable of generating rain or thundershowers over parts of the north-eastern States, south-east Bay of Bengal, south Andaman Sea, south Arabian Sea, the Comorin area and the Gulf of Mannar.
Low to medium clouds (partly-clouded conditions) were seen over the western Himalayan region and south peninsular India.
The forecast, valid for the next two days, said that fairly widespread rain or thundershowers would occur over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, while it would be scattered over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
A warning valid for the period said that an isolated thunder squall may occur over the north-eastern States, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Orissa and Jharkhand.
The proceedings could perk up further from Saturday as the western disturbance livens up the resident trough leading to a more active mop-up of moisture from the Bay of Bengal.
Presently, the westerly system would spark off rain or thundershowers over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh during the next 24 hours before scaling up in intensity.
The rains would filter into adjoining plains of the north-west, with Uttarkhand, Punjab, Haryana, north Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh bracing to slip under the same from Wednesday.
Scattered rain or thundershowers would occur over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Kerala and coastal Karnataka during this period, in tandem with the fluctuating fortunes of the north-south trough.
Rains would be isolated over Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, south Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Lakshadweep, interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The proceedings could perk up further from Saturday as the western disturbance livens up the resident trough leading to a more active mop-up of moisture from the Bay of Bengal.
Presently, the westerly system would spark off rain or thundershowers over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh during the next 24 hours before scaling up in intensity.
The rains would filter into adjoining plains of the north-west, with Uttarkhand, Punjab, Haryana, north Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh bracing to slip under the same from Wednesday.
Scattered rain or thundershowers would occur over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Kerala and coastal Karnataka during this period, in tandem with the fluctuating fortunes of the north-south trough.
Rains would be isolated over Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, south Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Lakshadweep, interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Moisture incursion sets up heavy weather over east
Moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal and the North-eastern States due to strong southerly to south-westerly winds has been triggering heavy to very heavy overnight rains over these regions.
Assam Pounded
An India Meteorological Department (IMD) update on Tuesday said that fairly widespread rainfall has occurred over Assam and Meghalaya while it was scattered over Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Tripura.
Very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has been reported from Cherapunji (36 cm), Rangia (13 cm) Agartala and Itanagar (11 cm each), Silchar (10 cm), Tezpur (9 cm) and Guwahati (8 cm) during the 24 hours ending Tuesday morning.
Satellite imagery on Tuesday morning revealed convective clouds (rain-generating clouds) over parts of Assam and Meghalaya.
The moisture incursion is set to continue over the north-east and West Bengal, and the possibility of thundershowers has enhanced, thanks to prevailing elevated convective available potential energy (Cape) values.
A warning valid for the next two days said that isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunder squall would occur over Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh during the next two days.
Fresh Westerly
The weather-setting north-south trough ran down from Bihar to south Tamil Nadu across Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh in lower levels.
Over North-west India, a fresh western disturbance is approaching western Himalayan region, which would be active over the region for the next four days, the IMD said.
Thunderstorm activity is also prevalent towards the South with peninsular seas also warming up to the occasion.
Convective clouds were seen over Jammu and Kashmir and the south Andaman Sea, while low to medium clouds (partly clouded conditions) hung in over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarkhand, Orissa, south Peninsular India, remaining parts of the north-east, south Arabian Sea and south Bay of Bengal.
Forecast until Friday said that fairly widespread rain to thundershower activity would continue over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya and scattered over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
Scattered rain or thundershowers are likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and isolated over Uttarkhand.
Isolated rain or thundershowers are likely over coastal and south interior Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Squall In Punjab
Isolated rain or thundershowers accompanied with squall are likely over Punjab and Haryana during the next two days. This could prove damaging for the standing wheat crop.
Isolated rain or thundershowers accompanied with squall would also occur over Orissa and north coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Meanwhile, severe heat wave conditions prevailed over isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana and north Rajasthan overnight on Tuesday.
Heat wave conditions prevailed over the remaining parts of Punjab, Haryana and north Rajasthan, many parts of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, north Orissa, Vidarbha, Delhi, Chandigarh and isolated pockets of Telangana.
For a second day running, the maximum daily temperature was driven away to the east as a prevailing western disturbance loomed large and its calming influence prevailed over hilly regions of the north-west.
The day's maximum of 46.3 deg Celsius was recorded at Jamshedpur in Jharkhand.
A warning for the next 24 hours said that heat wave conditions would continue over parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Jharkhand, interior Orissa, north Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha during the next 24 hours.
But maximum temperatures are expected to fall by 1 to 3 deg Celsius over parts of northwest and central India during the next three days with a follow-up western disturbance assuming centre-stage over the north-west.

More Thunder storms this year ?? !!
Pre monsoon TS is common for this period for the stations located along the foot hills of western ghat [eastern slope. This has been known to our ancient Tamil too and during this period Vaigai used to get run off from the Premonsoon TS and Chitrai Festival is based on this pre monsoon thunder showers only. But on the other hand frequent pre monsoon TS in entire Kerala side is less common. Norwesters which claimed more than 80 lives in North Jharkhan, North Bihar,north WB was a cluster of thunder cell for form as a Line squall. But I am sure that the weather phenomenon is NOT a Tornada. Instead it may be a Low Level Jet. Locating it in weather maps may not be possible. But DWR can locate the clusters. [Kolcotta DWR]The phenomenon occurred around 2217 hrs IST and last till next day morning sun rise.

Westerly system to bring down mercury in stages
An incoming western disturbance has expectedly helped ratchet up the ambient mercury level in north-west India even as heat weave conditions prevailed over large stretches in the region.
On Sunday, the western disturbance sat parked over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir, an update from India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. It is expected to get a move to the east, as is normal.
HEAT ENGINE
Western disturbances tend to initially pump up mercury due to the presence of the ‘heat engine' in front and rising motion of air, which produces cloudiness and precipitation in later stages.
In this manner, the incoming system would help bring down the temperatures for a while in the affected region but would leave it to face the wrath of the April sun while moving east and sets up weather at the next outpost, to the east and northeast India.
Meanwhile, the IMD expected no significant change in maximum temperatures over plains of northwest and adjoining central India during the two days.
Severe heat wave conditions have been prevailing over most parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and parts of Uttarakhand, the Jammu division of Jammu and Kashmir and isolated pockets of north Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh during the 24 hours ending Sunday morning.
HEAT WAVE
Heat wave conditions are also prevailing over parts of Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Gujarat and remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh.
Under these conditions, the maximum temperature shot up to a new high of 47 deg Celsius at Ganganagar in Rajasthan.
A warning issued by the IMD said that heat wave conditions would continue over Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, north Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh during the next two days at least.
A fall in maximum temperatures can be expected over north-west, central and east India from Friday tanks to cloudiness, moisture incursion and thundershower activity associated with the westerly activity.
But it may not last for too long, according to international weather models.
The incoming western disturbance would be suitably endowed to stay in the reckoning and dictate weather over the western Himalayas over the next four days.

Rain to continue in the North-East
Seasonal thunderstorms have announced their arrival with a vengeance over Bihar and West Bengal with typically destructive gale-force winds wreaking havoc in the contiguous border areas of the States late on Tuesday night.
Brute force
Thunderstorms during this time of the year are seasonal in nature and are called Nor'westers, thanks to the trigger in the westerlies blowing from northwest India.
Nor'westers can at times pack a deadly punch with accompanying high winds, lightning and thunder activity. Moisture incursion over heated land sets up the ideal conditions for the storms to take shape.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its update on Wednesday that the causative land-based trough ran down from Bihar to south Chhattisgarh across Jharkhand and Orissa.
WESTERLIES TO GAIN
Another trough ran down from north Karnataka to Tamil Nadu with an embedded cyclonic circulation over Karnataka and neighbourhood.
Satellite cloud imagery showed the presence of low to medium clouds (partly clouded conditions) over parts of peninsular India, the north-eastern States, south-east Arabian Sea and south Bay of Bengal.
Meanwhile, international weather models indicate that the westerlies would hold sway over the region during this week and possibly the next, with western disturbance activity picking up once again.
The first of the series may enter the northwest as early as Thursday (tomorrow) and may get particularly accentuated over east and northeast India due to the presence of the trough. The wind strength and the depth of the trough are mutually complimentary, with one feeding the other. Since the Nor'westers have drawn first blood in the Bihar/West Bengal region, it is likely that the latter could witness continued activity over the next few days as well.
The IMD has forecast scattered to fairly widespread rain or thundershowers over the north-eastern States during the next 24 hours but may decrease thereafter.
Isolated rain or thundershower is likely over West Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand and Orissa during the same period.
Widespread showers
Forecast until Monday hinted at the possibility of scattered to fairly widespread rain or thundershowers with isolated thunder squall over the Northeastern States. According to the US National Centres for Environmental Prediction, the week ending April 21 would see isolated rains over parts of northwest India, scattered over northeast India and the southwest coast (mainly Kerala, south-coastal Karnataka).
But the proceedings would likely get a leg-up during the week that follows (April 22-30) with showers activity being indicated from southwest Rajasthan to the rest of the northwest India, east India and northeast India.
The northeast is shown to ‘light up' yet again thanks to raised level of thunderstorm activity from Nor'westers.
The ‘rain trail' from the northeast will sneak down south-southeast to east India, east-central India and adjoining peninsular India before linking up with the weather activity along the southwest coast.
This is being mainly attributed to the arrival of strong western disturbance around April 20, which is expected to dig its heels into northwest India before moving further east.

Heavy electric storms over South Karnataka and Andhra

From 12:30pm IST to 6:30 pm IST.
Very heavy electric (Thunder) showers over SOuth Karnataka, South Andhra, Central Andhra and even into South-west Orissa.
Showery activity can also be traced over Kerala western ghats.
For the past 24 hrs the South-west Bay, South of Srilanka and Gulf of mannar was very active with lots of showery activity and it continues to be like that at present (6:30pm) as well.
South extreme of Tamilnadu and Kerala was under high cloud cover from 12pm.. but no reports of rain yet.

Thunderstorms have erupted once again over the North-East bringing rain to many places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya during the past 24 hours ending Monday morning.
These seasonal showers triggered by north-westerly winds (Nor'westers) have steadfastly refused to venture out further to the southeast, especially over West Bengal.
RAISED CHANCES
This has led mercury to gallop to the highest in at least last 10 years' recorded history. Coverage of clouds as revealed by satellite pictures on Monday does not indicate anything to the contrary either.
According to the US National Centres for Environmental Prediction, the convective available potential energy (CAPE) values are high for areas in and around the Sunderbans and Metro Kolkata.
High CAPE values signal the probability for thundershowers, which have largely evaded this region so far. Towards the south, these values continue to be high for Kerala and adjoining south-interior and coastal Tamil Nadu.
In fact, Kerala is among the few meteorological subdivisions that have recorded normal rain during the period from March 1 to April 7, an update from India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday. The others are Konkan, Goa, Assam and Meghalaya (excess); and Marathwada, Vidarbha, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura (normal).
HEAT WAVE
A crippling heat wave has held centre-stage over large parts of east and northwest India during the 24 hours ending Monday morning.
Parts of east-central India – Jharkhand, interior Orissa, Vidarbha and Telangana – managed to escape the blast of oppressive heat generated by the trans-Pacific ridge (high-pressure region that prevents cloud-building from taking place). Heat wave conditions also prevailed over many parts of Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, interior Orissa and parts of Chhattisgarh, north Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Vidarbha.
WESTERN DISTURBANCE
The IMD traced a western disturbance lying over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir. It is forecast to affect the western Himalayan region during the next 24 hours.
The system that features a core of winds cooler than the prevailing air in the northwest but packing moisture content is expected to trigger widespread rain or thundershowers over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours.
The IMD expects the thunderstorms to roll down the hills of the northwest onto the plains as well, with scattered rain or thundershowers being forecast for Himachal Pradesh, Uttarkhand, Punjab and Haryana during the same period. Satellite cloud imagery showed the presence of low to medium clouds (partly clouded conditions) over Jammu and Kashmir, parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarkhand and Punjab.
The cloud formation is expected to help bring down the maximum day temperatures briefly over these regions.
Westerlies from an earlier western disturbance passing into the east are already causing thundershowers over the northeast. This activity would get another fillip as the incoming system too moves, as it will, to the east and northeast.

Heating of north-west to aid monsoon
The ongoing heat wave overseen by a trans-Pacific ‘ridge' (high-pressure region) is a ‘sacrifice' that central and north-west India would need to put up with in the short-term if only to ensure longer-term ‘gains.'
There is no one-to-one relationship with this sacrifice (abnormal heat) and the expected gains (from a monsoon later), says Dr Akhilesh Gupta, leading operational forecaster and Advisor, Department of Science and Technology.
Major enabler
But the heating is a crucial enabler of the temperature gradient (monsoon is derived from the differential heating of sea and land) - which, in turn, sets up the pressure gradient (high in the south to low in the northwest) for rains to canter into the rest of the mainland.
Western disturbance activity and their cooling impact, can, however, interfere with the heating process, and are generally wished away during the pre-monsoon season.
The westerly activity has been subdued over the last week or so, which has helped the accelerated heating of west and north-west India as well. The hot-air spewing ridge is forecast to hold strong during the next week.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated the possibility of a feeble western disturbance entering the north-west around Sunday causing rains over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
IMD has also held out the possibility of the rains filtering into the adjoining plains, but is not supported by the outlook by international weather models. If the plains were to get rains as forecast by the IMD, the heating process would get impacted.
US forecasts
In fact, the Global Forecast System (GFS) model of the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) does not see any respite from the heat wave for the north-west, except over Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining extreme north India.
This model sees temperature regime of above 40 deg Celsius growing its footprint over the northern three-fourths of the country next week. The top heat is forecast to gradually envelop the southeast peninsula as well (including interior and coastal Tamil Nadu).
The only respite would be brought about by the occasional thundershowers that are forecast to break out around the seasonal trough that will constantly shift its alignment within the larger eastern corridor.
Westerly flows would just add to the volatility by supplying moisture and keeping the trough to the east of the country ‘on the boil.' In fact, thunderstorms over northeast India are forecast to get a fresh lease of life in this manner, during the next week.
On Friday, such a trough ran down from Bihar south-southwest to Lakshadweep area across east Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Telangana and Kerala and featured an embedded cyclonic circulation over Lakshadweep.
A warning issued by the IMD on Friday said that heat wave conditions may continue to hold over Rajasthan, interior Gujarat, north Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidarbha during the next 24 hours.
Severe heat wave conditions existed over parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, west Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and isolated pockets of Chhattisgarh, west Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha.
Maximum temperatures were above normal by 4 to 7 deg Celsius over many parts of northwest and central India, interior Orissa and Gujarat. The highest maximum temperature of 44.7 deg Celsius was recorded at Akola and Brahmapuri in Maharashtra.
Satellite imagery showed the presence of convective clouds over parts of south Arabian Sea and south Bay of Bengal. Low to medium clouds were traced over northwest, central and peninsular India and the North-Eastern States.

Top heat returns to scorch central, north-west India
True to forecasts, heat wave conditions have spread to more parts of the vulnerable east-to-central-India belt during the 24 hours ending on Wednesday morning.

Isolated pockets of Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha and Telangana have already been brought under intense heat of above 40 degree Celsius, an update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Having extended its writ to over north Gujarat, the fresh wave of April heat is knocking at the doors of adjoining northwest India even as the causative ridge of higher atmospheric pressure hung large over the region.
An IMD outlook for the next 24 hours said that heat wave conditions may probe into south Rajasthan even as parts of Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha and Telangana feel the heat.
Maximum temperatures were above normal by 4 to 5 degree Celsius over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Telangana, north Gujarat and Rajasthan during the 24 hours ending Wednesday morning.
The highest maximum temperature of 44.0 degree Celsius was recorded for the third successive day at Sambalpur in Orissa, and also in Idar (Gujarat) and Chandrapur (Vidarbha), reflecting the extent of the westward build of top heat.
No significant change in maximum temperatures is predicted over the Indo-Gangetic plains and adjoining parts of central and east India during the next two days.
MAY RISE FURTHER
Maximum temperature may rise further over Rajasthan, interior Gujarat and west Madhya Pradesh leading to heat wave conditions over more areas during the next three days, the IMD said.
Meanwhile, the seasonal north-south trough had shifted alignment overnight to run down from east Bihar to Marathwada across Jharkhand, Orissa, south Chhattisgarh and north Telangana.
It featured an embedded cyclonic circulation over Marathwada and neighbourhood at the southern end with potential for generating unstable weather (isolated thunderstorms and showers) along the formation.
Strong northwesterlies to westerlies have been prevailing over the Gangetic plains.
Satellite imagery showed the presence of convective clouds over parts of south Bay of Bengal.
Low to medium clouds (partly clouded conditions) were seen over Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, peninsular India and southeast Arabian Sea.
The convective (rain-bearing) clouds over the south Bay of Bengal was part of the larger parcel constituting an easterly wave in the making, with a predominant bearing to the southeast (off Indonesia).
The US National Centres for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) is of the view that the resultant moisture transport from south and southeast Bay would precipitate a wet session over southeast coastal Tamil Nadu and adjoining Kerala (southwest coast) during the week ending April 14.
The proceedings would become better organised during the week that follows (April 14 to 22) with more areas in southern Tamil Nadu getting wet even as Kerala would see a likely scaling up of shower activity.
This outlook is mostly endorsed by the Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) of the US National Weather Services as also the International Research Institute (IRI) for Climate Prediction and Society at Columbia University.
Isolated to scattered rain or thundershowers would occur over extreme south peninsular India and Lakshadweep, the IMD said in its update.
International models indicate a revival of seasonal thunderstorm activity over northeast India from Saturday (April 10) onwards as western disturbances touch off fresh activity in the region.
The IMD too has said in its outlook that isolated to scattered rain or thundershowers accompanied with isolated thunder squall would occur here during the next 48 hours and increase thereafter.

Is it appropriate to call as Easterlies as this time of year ??
Is appropriate to term it EASTERLY wave during pre monsoon period. Even though the winds up to certain level be easterly i do not think it producing a wave. Any how it can be termed as weak easterlies.
To day 03.04.2010 /2113 hrs IST Kerala coast and SIK will be experiencing rainfall.
We in TN will also get rain very soon, once the flare up medium to low clouds in the Bay touches coast. Lower winds are predominantly southerly to SEly where as the upper winds are SWly.

A hot air-spewing ‘ridge' (region with high atmospheric pressure) lying spread-eagled over the Bay of Bengal, central and peninsular India and jutting into the Arabian Sea is now triggering a heat wave.
The ridge stretches across west to east right from the west Pacific across South-East Asia, southern India and central Africa until April 9.
It may get ‘click-released' and flung back into position over the Bay by the next day.
But it would have triggered heating of east and central India in phases before the temperature maxima scorches the west and the northwest, says an outlook of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).
The ‘April heat' should entrench itself over central and adjoining northwest India for the monsoon-enabling ‘heat low' to develop over the region in subsequent stages. In ideal settings, the ‘heat low' (of lower atmospheric pressure) sets up the pressure differential relative to the southwest which the monsoon rides on to bring about maximum possible spatial and temporal coverage.

A weather-making north-south trough has been running down from Bihar to North Bay of Bengal bringing isolated thundershowers over east and northeast India, the IMD update said.
Meanwhile, stray moisture transported inland by easterlies from the Bay of Bengal is being dumped as rain over isolated places over the south peninsula – mainly in Tamil Nadu and adjoining Kerala. International models have been suggesting that these rains would get better organised from Tuesday (April 6).
The IMD too has said that isolated rain or thundershowers would occur over extreme south peninsular India during the next two days and increase thereafter.
An IMD experimental outlook for the month of April has indicated enhanced probability of normal to above normal rain for the region, especially interior Tamil Nadu and adjoining Kerala spreading thin to the respective coastal regions.
The Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) of the US National Weather Services seems to suggest that this might happen as easterlies turn southeasterlies over the peninsula and sets up a rendezvous with west to northwesterlies from the Arabian Sea.
This is the most likely scenario unfolding during the week ending April 12 up to which forecasts were available. The opposing wind fronts might go to set up a wind discontinuity/trough breeding thunderstorms. IMD forecasts for the next few days said that isolated rain or thundershowers may occur over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep, coastal and south interior Karnataka.

A weather-making north-south trough has been running down from Bihar to North Bay of Bengal bringing isolated thundershowers over east and northeast India, the IMD update said.
Meanwhile, stray moisture transported inland by easterlies from the Bay of Bengal is being dumped as rain over isolated places over the south peninsula – mainly in Tamil Nadu and adjoining Kerala. International models have been suggesting that these rains would get better organised from Tuesday (April 6).
The IMD too has said that isolated rain or thundershowers would occur over extreme south peninsular India during the next two days and increase thereafter.
An IMD experimental outlook for the month of April has indicated enhanced probability of normal to above normal rain for the region, especially interior Tamil Nadu and adjoining Kerala spreading thin to the respective coastal regions.
The Climate Prediction Centre (CPC) of the US National Weather Services seems to suggest that this might happen as easterlies turn southeasterlies over the peninsula and sets up a rendezvous with west to northwesterlies from the Arabian Sea.
This is the most likely scenario unfolding during the week ending April 12 up to which forecasts were available. The opposing wind fronts might go to set up a wind discontinuity/trough breeding thunderstorms. IMD forecasts for the next few days said that isolated rain or thundershowers may occur over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep, coastal and south interior Karnataka.
Satellite imagery showed convective (rain-bearing) clouds over parts of southeast Arabian Sea, south Bay of Bengal and south Andaman Sea. Low to medium clouds (partially clouded conditions) hung over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarkhand due to feeble western disturbance activity.
