  1. Meanwhile Karnataka heads for DROUGHT!
Dams in Cauvery basin near empty due to scanty rainfall.

With the monsoon playing traunt in the catchment areas coming under Kodagu in Karnataka and Wayanad in Kerala, the depleting water levels in the Cauvery basin reservoirs was causing anxiety to farmers. Farmers and the people were a worried lot over the low water level in Krishna Raja Sagar(KRS) reservoir built pacross the river Cauvery near here, who depend on river Cauvery for irrigation and drinking water. Poor monsoon in Kodagu district has led to the grim situation, sources said.

The level at KRS stood at 85.75 ft today, against the maximum level of 124.80 ft. The inflow was only 1,766 cusecs. The level on this day last year was 113 ft, while inflow was 50,000 cusecs. Irrigation department sources told UNI that upper dams of KRS reservoir such as Hemavathy dam in Hassan district too had not filled up this year. The Hemavathy level stood at 2,881 ft as against 2906 ft last year. Similarly, the inflow was 1563 cusecs as against previous year's inflow of 46,000 cusecs.

The water level at Harangi reservoir has also come down this year. The level was 2827.11 ft, against the full level of 2859 feet due to scanty rain.

Meanwhile, Kabini reservoir, normally the first to reach the maximum level was yet to fill up owing to poor rains in Wayanad. The level was 2276.84 ft against the maximum level of 2284 ft. The inflow into the dam was 3078 cusecs, while the discharge was only 250 cusecs. Mysore and Bangalore, which depend on KRS for drinking water, might face problem if the level did not increase, which was possible only if monsoon was active in Kodagu. According to Agriculture department usually June and July months were ideal for paddy cultivation, but the cultivation has been delayed due to scanty rainfall.
