  3. Dear Pradeep,
Chinna Kallar [Coimbatore District] and Devala [The Nilgiri District]gets its maximum rainfall during SW monsoon period only. This time, as has been predicted earlier there will be lesser amount of rainfall during SW monsoon period in the western sides of western ghat where Chinna Kallar and Devala are located. This is an indication. Your pre- monsoon (up to 7.5.2010) study somewhat depicted rainfall pattern especially during SW monsoon period. However Kanyakumari district is also known for its copious rainfall. The western side of the district will easily get more than 1500mm annual rainfall. Some of the locations in the hills like Upper Kothaiyar, Balamore etc are getting rainfall greater than 2500mm [upper Kothaiyar still gets more rainfall ranging to 3500mm] However upper Kothaiyar has to be accessed by road from Ambasamudram only.
Hence Chinna Kallar or Devala overtaking the toppers before May end is LESS probable only.

  7. Dear Pradeep,
You are right. Chinna Kallar and Upper Nirar are closer by to each other. There are several rain gauges in and around Chinna Kallar. Nirar is a west flowing river passing through Chinna Kallar. TNPWD has installed raingauges st Lower Nirar Dam [LND] and near Upper Nirar . In Upper Nirar raingauge is situated near TNPWD guest house.
The famous Parambikulam-Aliyar Project [PAP] tunnel starts from here. These raingauges are maintained by TNPWD and daily data is made available on real time basis in the web based reporting system maintained by Disaster Management and Mitigation Department,[Tamilnadu Revenue Administration-http://revenue.tn.nic.in but the site is pass word protected and restricted site too.]
Upper Nirar and Chinna Kallar (raingauges) are closer by only distanced by roughly two km from each other.
At Chinna Kallar TANTEA, a wing of TN Forest is maintaining a raingauge. This data is also made available in the web based reporting system.
These rainfall data are world renowned. Recently in Venkateswara University ,Tirupathy a paper has been published in a seminar depicting the reasons for the copious rainfall at Chinna Kallar. The main reason for any heaviest rainfall occurrence are
[1] The orientation of mountains and the valley it forms.
[2] The ideal elevation i.e about 1200m or so.
    [3] The orographic effect
The annual rainfall of Chinna Kallar based on about sixty years data is 4026.4mm where as annual rainfall of Upper Nirar based on available 31 years data is 2871.7mm.
Similarly Sholayar Dam may also be considered one among the wettest rainfall area in that region.
