Latest on "05B" - No name yet

According to me it's moving north and slightly weak at this stage...

IMD's story:
********************************************
A depression over southeast and adjoining south west Bay of Bengal and lay centred at 1730 hours IST of yesterday, the 13th November 2008 near lat.11.5° N and long. 85.5° E, about 600 kms east-southeast of Chennai. It then moved northwestwards, intensified into a deep depression and lay centred at 0830 hours IST of today, the 14th November 2008, near lat. 12.5 N and Long. 85.0 E about 520 km east-southeast of Chennai and 600 km southeast of Machlipatanam. The system is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm and move in a northwesterly direction towards coastal Andhra Pradesh. Under its influence, rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls is likely over coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining areas of Tamil Nadu during next 48 hours commencing from today, the 14th November 2008 afternoon.

  3. This Storm would not impact Tamil nadu at all..looks like it.It has moved north above the chennai lattitude and hence very less probability of hitting the TN coast, unless if something like the one that happened in 1996 where a cyclone moved up north as far as orissa but then back tracked weakened and hit chennai as a depression. It might even move up north towards the orissa coast.
Sad thing is that TN is left high and dry as these low pressure systems are significant for the NE monsoon rains. We might then have to wait for another system to impact the coast which may be few and far considering that we have come to the middle of the monsoon season.

Its very rightly said that the NE monsoon is very erratic. The last time we can good rains was in 2005.The remaining two years the monsoon was somewhat ok.This year so far the city has received only about 38 Cms of rains.
Lets hope this cyclone weakens stays put and be carried by the NE trade winds towards TN..:) very optimistic person indeed..

  6. Looks like there might be an easterly wave later on this week that might bring rainfall to TN. So far we have had deficient rainfall.
The thing about these low pressure systems is that, when they remain as low pressure they bring rainfall to TN, but the moment they intensify and become depressions or cyclones they veer away from the TN coast most of the times and the rainfall goes away with it. or else the depressions should form in the south west bay in the 10 N latitude.those that form in the south east bay usually head north towards andhra or orissa or west bengal.
Hope we still manage to get a good monsoon this year

    One suggestion from me:
Shall WE start a common HOSTED website (blog kind) for "India weather, climate, environment...".
In that we can allow each APPROVED & registered member to post articles.
