Snow in Sahara desert !!

Wondering why Mysore registered the coldest minimum temperature in 120 years recently? Steven Goddard who administers the bog Real Science give us a clue: "Global temperatures are plummeting, and the temperature recorded by AMSU satellite of 251.858K on January 19 was the coldest of any day since at least 2002.”
It’s all happening. The Arctic Oscillation (AO) has finally flipped to its strongly negative mode and if it stays that way, a deep freeze is on its way that would plunge global temperatures to lows, last seen during the 1945-77 global cooling cycle the very least. A foretaste of winter to come during February is already indicated by some of these very recent events:
Snow in Sahara Desert

Snow fell Tuesday in the province of Bechar in the Sahara Desert in western Algeria. A 24-hour cold spell brought snow and rain to the region. Strong wind blew the snow across roads and buildings in the province of Bechar. The weatherman at the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) recorded sub-zero temperatures at Jebel Jais area of Ras Al Khaimah and forecast that these conditions are set to continue for the rest of the week. People who live in the region said the snow was good for the palm trees because it killed parasites. Bechar is located in the northern Sahara, about 36 miles south of the Moroccan border. Extreme Cold Wave in the Gulf countries

According to the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) forecast for today, minimum temperatures are set to dip to 0°C in the UAE’s mountainous regions while internal areas could see temperatures dipping to a nippy 5°C and coastal areas could see minimum temperatures of 13°C.

The NCMS forecast reads: “Cold weather during day times to very cold during night. The cloud amount will increase at times, especially over the northern areas, with chance of light rain. Winds will be west to northwesterly, moderate to fresh in general. Sea will be moderate to rough with wave height 3 - 5 / 6 ft offshore.”

Unaccustomed to the chill, UAE residents are putting up a brave front as a cold wave continues to spread across the length and breadth of the country, with extreme weather conditions sweeping mountainous regions and the country recording its lowest temperatures for the year yesterday. Rough weather has prompted a warning to beachgoers across the UAE to refrain from venturing into the sea. The UAE’s met department has predicted that the rough weather will continue until Friday

Leh: minus 22.2 degrees Celsius

Leh town in Ladakh recorded the coldest night of this season as mercury settled at a low of minus 21.8 degrees Celsius, an official of the Met department said. Nearby Kargil town recorded a low of minus 21.0 degrees Celsius, making it the second coldest place in the state. In Kashmir Valley, Pahalgam resort was the coldest place at minus 16.5 degrees followed by Gulmarg Skiing resort at minus 16.2 degrees Celsius, the official said.Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 12.4 degrees Celsius followed by Kokernag resort at minus 9.9 degrees Celsius.Srinagar city, the summer capital of the state, saw mercury dipping to minus 5.0 degrees Celsius last night.

 An Igloo Village in Davos

The Occupy protests that blossomed across the globe in the fall of 2011 are popping up at the annual meeting of the rich and powerful in Davos Switzerland. Using the weather to their advantage, protesters are carving out blocks of snow and shaping them into igloos that are surprisingly warm, if not an effort to make. They hope to make develop an "igloo village" near the Davos train station.

Deep freeze kicks in as Arctic Oscillation turns strongly negative

The first half of winter has clearly been much milder than the last couple of winters, as a very strong polar vortex has controlled the pattern, and shielded Europe from any sustained cold. Recently, the vortex has weakened and the AO turned strongly negative as seen above, which would allow seasonably cold weather across much of Europe in February if not earlier.

According to NOAA as seen in the above diagrams the AO index describes the relative intensity of a semi-permanent low-pressure centre over the North Pole. A band of upper-level winds circulates around this centre, forming a vortex. When the AO index is positive and the vortex intense, the winds tighten like a noose around the North Pole, locking cold air in place.

A negative AO and weak vortex … allow intrusions of cold air to plunge southward into North America, Europe, and Asia. … the index has been mostly positive in wintertime since the late 1980s. The Arctic Oscillation has strengthened in recent decades, contributing to the unusual warmth over the Northern Hemisphere land masses.
The first sign of a much weakened polar vortex is that the Arctic Oscillation (AO), also referred to as the Northern Annular Mode (NAM) has recently switched to a strongly negative mode - the first time in four months.Britain blasted by snow & ice yesterday is example of this. Read here.

The AO is an atmospheric circulation pattern in which the atmospheric pressure over the Polar Regions varies in opposition with that over middle latitudes (about 45 degrees North) on time scales ranging from weeks to decades. The oscillation extends through the depth of the troposphere. During the months of January through March it extends upward into the stratosphere where it modulates in the strength of the westerly vortex that encircles the Arctic polar cap region.

The NOAA's AO prediction for the next two weeks shows a strong negative trend which typically in the past has brought colder weather for Europe. The bottom chart for Europe shows the anomaly for the coming week. The middle chart shows the foret.cast for the week after. It’s going to get even colder. Europe this year may get a hard winter after all – it may be just arriving late. The lower chart of central Asia shows below normal temps are forecast for almost every region for the coming week, and the middle chart shows even deeper cold for the week after, as we saw is the case for Europe. In fact it’s rare to see that much cold over such a vast continent

However, AO's cousin the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) sill remains weakly positive (graph to right) but ensemble mean (graph to the left) suggests models are indecisive which mode NAO will go by February. But since the polar vortex is rapidly giving way, the odds favour the NAO too slipping into strongly negative mode sometime in February or even earlier.

Atlantic over the past 50 years,. h Other studies have found correlations between NAO and Indian monsoon.  “Interannual and long-term variability in the North Atlantic Oscillation and Indian summer monsoon rainfall” (Dugam, Kakade and Verma, Indian Institue of Tropical Meteorology, 1997 [http://cat.inist.fr/?aModele=afficheN&cpsidt=2068184]) investigated 108 years of NAO / monsoon data and found that:

“The decadal scale analysis reveals that the NAO during winter (December-January-February) and spring (March-April-May) has a statistically significant inverse relationship with the summer monsoon rainfall of Northwest India, Peninsular India and the whole of India. The highest correlation is observed with the winter NAO. The NAO and Northwest India rainfall relationship is stronger than that for the Peninsular and whole of India rainfall on climatological and sub-climatological scales.”

Atmospheric Blocking

When the polar vortex weakens, the polar jet stream slows and meanders in a form that allows the extension of low pressure lobes much farther to the south. These can become stationary for days and block the normal circulation of the atmosphere. The negative AO/NAO is associated with a slowed polar vortex and polar jet stream. When the jet stream slows, it meanders in a waveform pattern (Rossby waves). The general effect is illustrated below:

Blocking has a lot to do with the severity of winter weather in the Northern Hemisphere, and the AO has a strong ability to control blocking. A blocking event can be defined as a week or more of excess pressure in the mid-troposphere together with an anticyclone at the surface. … blocking occurs preferentially during the low AO phase in Alaska, the North Atlantic, and Russia. [http://www.jisao.washington.edu/wallace/ncar_notes/] Barriopedro et al (“Solar modulation of Northern Hemisphere winter blocking”, Journal of Geophysical Research, Vol.113, 2008 [http://idl.ul.pt/davidbarriopedro/2008%20Barriopedro%20et%20al.pdf]) found that:

“Solar activity modulates the preferred locations for blocking occurrence over both Oceans, causing local frequency responses therein. Over the Pacific Ocean high/low solar activity induces an enhanced blocking activity over its eastern/western part. Atlantic blocking occurrence increases for both (high/low) solar phases, with a spatial dependent response confined to western/eastern Atlantic. … Low solar Atlantic blocking episodes last longer, are located further east and become more intense than high solar blocking events.”

If DMK loses polls, blame their Renewable Energy policy in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu had finally voted on April 13th though counting is on May 13th. In what is seen as an extremely tight contest with tempers rising high during the campaign, among the major poll issues was the acute power shortage faced by the state. With voting over, Tamil Nadu is set to face longer power outages following a decision by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) to increase the load shedding period from two hours to three hours every day.

Chennai faces an-hour-long power cut while other parts of the state it will be not less than 3 hours a day. The TANGEDCO decision comes in the face of an increasing power deficit in the State, combined with rising deficits in other States.

As an energy consultant observed "Tamil Nadu has put too many of its eggs in the wind basket."

It’s their DNA that drives NGOs to embrace Climate Porn

The hysterical rhetoric used by many environmentalists and NGOs to hype the threat of global warming had been termed by Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), a left-leaning British think tank as ‘Climate Porn' who elaborated:
“This alarmist interpretation is characterized by an inflated sense of urgency and cinematic tones. The public become disempowered because it's too big for them; and when it sounds like science fiction, there is an element of the unreal there."
On July 15th 2009 Greenpeace issued a press release claiming, “As permanent ice decreases, we are looking at ice-free summers in the Arctic as early as 2030.” Just a month later, Gerd Leipold then boss of Greenpeace was forced to admit that his organization put out false and misleading information about the Arctic ice melts. When confronted on the BBC’s ‘Hardtalk’ program, Leipold said it “may have been a mistake” but justified the claims saying:
"We as a pressure group have to emotionalize issues and we’re not ashamed of emotionalizing issues.”
As a climatologist Leipold should have known the Greenpeace claim of permanent Arctic melt was complete scientific nonsense. But instead he justifies this decision on the ground that emotionalizing issues is a compulsive behaviour of a pressure group as if dictated by a recessive trait of its DNA!

Solar Theory Emerges the Most Plausible explanation to Earthquakes

“Just hours after the horrific earthquake and tsunami devastated coastal areas of Japan, global warming alarmists like the BBC are already injecting climate change propaganda into their coverage of the story, hastily exploiting the tragedy as a vehicle through which to push their increasingly desperate and discredited enviro-fascist agenda.

If you thought that climate change alarmists wouldn't be so insensitive as to build their warped argument on the bodies of freshly dead corpses, then think again."

Global warmists now claim that the recent double whammy, earthquake and Tsunami, suffered by Japan were on account of Global Warming.

So let’s begin by checking global temperatures. As seen in the above graph, the last two months (January & February) UAH Satellite data indicates that average global temperature anomaly has slipped into the negative band due to the La NiƱa effect. Temperatures are back to those of the seventies cooling. In Japan, is still in winter. Victims of these recent extreme events in Japan have to face snow and sub-zero temperatures, which is the reason India sent tons of blankets - to make our small relief contribution count! So what global warming are we talking about?

Record snowfall in HP revives 2,000 glaciers

MANALI: Record snowfall in Himachal this year has revived more than 2,000 glaciers.

Almora's G B Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development's senior scientist J C Kuniyal said apart from reviving the glaciers , this year's record snowfall would also boost the crop cycle. "It is difficult to understand the environment. As we start talking about the dry winters, record snowfall leaves stunned everyone," he said.

He cautioned that unequal snowfall remains a matter of concern. But Lahaul-Spiti has received more than 175-cm snow in first 16 days of February, breaking the earlier record of 148-cm for the month in 1998.

Wonder why a senior climatologist should admit being stunned by record snowfall this year?  This blog has been regularly warning of such a prospect linked with a strong La NiƱa from July last year!

Are Weather Extremities Increasing? Scientific consensus swings to say they don't

The idea that climate extremes are supposed to get more frequent and in intensity is one of the most omni-present manifestations of the climate doomsday religion.

The Twentieth Century Reanalysis Project is the latest attempt by the climatologist research fraternity to seek an answer to this question whether weather extremities are on the rise. The project by using super-computers generated a dataset of global atmospheric circulation from 1871 to the present. As the extract of the Wall Street Journal in its article, The Weather Isn’t Getting Weirder  illustrates, the project’s initial findings, published last month, show no evidence of an intensifying weather trend:
“In the climate models, the extremes get more extreme as we move into a doubled CO2 world in 100 years", atmospheric scientist Gilbert Compo, one of the researchers on the project, tells me from his office at the University of Colorado, Boulder. “So we were surprised that none of the three major indices of climate variability that we used show a trend of increased circulation going back to 1871.” In other words, researchers have yet to find evidence of more-extreme weather patterns over the period, contrary to what the models predict. “There’s no data-driven answer yet to the question of how human activity has affected extreme weather,” adds Roger Pielke Jr., another University of Colorado climate researcher."

Global Temperatures Negative in January: End Game to Climate Debate Kicks Off

As seen in the above graph, for month ending January 2011, UAH (University of Alabama in Huntsville) satellite data confirms that global average temperature anomalies stood at -0.01 C. From a high of 0.6 C in March last year, this is a whooping 0.6 C plunge in 10 months and a 0.2 C plunge in just one month. The trendline (blue) captures the rapidity of the global cooling trend. What Cancun Climate Meet cannot do even if they came up with a global treaty, natural climatic variations does it in a jiffy - erasing century’s net warming effortlessly.

With Genghis Khan as their new icon, climate activists now openly flaunt their anti-human ideology

“Genghis Khan and his Mongol hordes had an impact on the global carbon cycle as big as today’s annual demand for gasoline.”
A study published by the website http://carsandpeople.sdsu.edu/ from San Diego State University goes so far to calculate one car is of 18 human equivalents. Accordingly, if Genghis Khan killed 40 million people, this is tantamount to 2,222,222 Genghis Khan Equivalents! Put simply, Genghis Khan and his Mongol hordes had an impact on the global carbon cycle as big as today’s annual demand for gasoline!

The study claimed that the Mongol invasion scrubbed off nearly 700 million tons of carbon from the atmosphere, cooling the planet as it roughly equals the amount of carbon global society now produces annually from gasoline.  Climate Depot blog further reported that the study concluded:

“Over the course of the century and a half run of the Mongol Empire, about 22 percent of the world's total land area had been conquered and an estimated 40 million people were slaughtered by the horse-driven, bow-wielding hordes. Depopulation over such a large swath of land meant that countless numbers of cultivated fields eventually returned to forests.

In other words, one effect of Genghis Khan's unrelenting invasion was widespread reforestation, and the re-growth of those forests meant that more carbon could be absorbed from the atmosphere...the longevity of the Mongol invasion made it stand out as having the biggest impact on the world's climate."

Breaking: Indian Environment Ministry formally challenges Human induced Global Warming

Jairam Ramesh, India's dynamic Environment Minister has done it again. A paper published by his ministry termed UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)'s claim on human induced global warming, as highly exaggerated as the latter's impact is significantly reduced by Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) that is responsible for low cloud formation over earth in the last 150 years.

The paper's lead author was U R Rao, former chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and was released by Jairam Ramesh himself. Analyzing the data between 1960 and 2005, Rao found that lesser GCRs were reaching the earth due to increase in solar magnetic field and thereby leading to increase in global warming. Says the paper:
“We conclude that the contribution to climate change due to the change in galactic cosmic ray intensity is quite significant and needs to be factored into the prediction of global warming and its effect on sea level raise and weather prediction.”
The real blow to the global warmist movement is when Jairam Ramesh defended climate scepticism and cautioned against foreign funded agendas of environmental organizations and NGOs like WWF, Greenpeace, Oxfam, Christian Aid, ActionAid  in the name of Climate Justice activism etc :
“There is a groupthink in climate science today. Anyone who raises alternative climate theories is immediately branded as a climate atheist in an atmosphere of climate evangelists,” he said. “Climate science is incredibly more complex than [developed countries] negotiators make it out to be… Climate science should not be driven by the West. We should not always be dependent on outside reports.”

June 2010: Drought in Sri Lanka is your fault; January 2011: Record rain in Sri Lanka is your fault - Tom Nelson

Droughts, floods, cold, heat and what have you, everything is climate change. Six months ago, Sri Lanka experienced a drought due to the El NiƱo effect and this month a flood due to the La NiƱa effect. "Sustainable or organic farming" had been given a big boost by humanitarian organizations after the Tsunami of 2004.

And yet, the drought and floods within a space of six months have pushed Sri Lanka into a food crisis - the food shortage to be felt in the months ahead. All their "sustainable" experiments"washed away by these weather extremes.

When will NGOs get over their global warming obsession? They can  only start making an impact if they track ENSO (El NiƱo-Southern Oscillation)  a natural oceanic cycle, in their adaptation and mitigation programmes.

What happens when WWF is in charge of the weather department?

This is a fast developing story. The forecast that global temperatures will rise by 4C by the end of this century is provided by the UK Met Office which Climate Justice Activists latch on to create mass hysteria.

So you may ask, why a photo of the popular Jack Nicholson movie “One flew over Cuckoo’s Nest”?

It’s because, the head of the Met Office was the former chief of WWF, UK and paid a salary higher than the Prime Minister of the UK. He brought with him many of his WFF colleagues with him. They practically run the UK Met Office.

For the last 3 years, the Met Office consistently predicted barbeque summers and milder winters to end up with mud on their faces. Last year, despite their winter forecast turning wrong, the Met Office still believed that cold winters will become rare:
"The winter so far has been one of the coldest for nearly 30 years in Britain, but such icy weather was more common in centuries past and should become even rarer going forward."
This year too they had been reduced to a laughing stock when their current winter forecast proved a failure - the third in successive years. But now they are fighting for their credibility by claiming that they informed the British government in late October this year of the possibility of a very cold winter, which is great if true. The problem is that they feed the BBC and the general public a contrary forecast - you guessed it, milder winter. The Met Office is the official weather agency for the BBC, so why this duplicity?

Once this story broke out, the BBC got so enraged that they filed a Freedom of Information request that pitted the BBC, Met Office and UK government one against the other. Public opinion within UK is growing to institute a parliamentary probe on this matter. The global warming propaganda machine of the UK is finally beginning to get unstuck. And once it does, it will be to the utter embarrassment of NGOs and environmental organizations that tout themselves as Climate Justice Movement!

Brisbane century worst floods predicted by climate sceptic Piers Corbyn, Weather Action

Thousands of Brisbane residents have been forced to evacuate their homes as the city braces itself for its worst flooding in more than a century. As the winding Brisbane River breached its banks in several places to engulf parks and footbridges and heavy rain continued to fall on the metropolitan area, the city's main roads and public transport system quickly became clogged as people rushed to get to higher ground. Early estimates suggested that more than 9,000 homes could be inundated when the Brisbane River peaks at 12ft on Thursday. The destruction was already evident yesterday, with a steady stream of debris, including boats and whole pontoons, floating down the swollen Brisbane River.

Record floods in 1893 dumped the gunship Paluma on the Brisbane Botanical Gardens, while in 1974, a torrent killed 16 people and inundated a third of the city's metropolitan area. The severe flooding threatening the state capital comes after almost one month of flooding across Queensland that now covers an area the size of France and Germany combined and could cost more than $10bn (£6.3 billion).

Government meteorologists have said that the flash flooding was almost impossible to predict. According to Anthropological Global Warming, they can't as the science is fraudulent. But climate sceptics using solar techniques have. Piers Corbyn of Weather Action, riding a wave of successful forecast this season, is one of them. Here's the forecast of the Australian floods

1998 remains hottest year in recorded history. 2010 falters at the finishing line

According to UAH (satellite) data, 1998 (+0.424 deg. C) barely edged out 2010 (+0.411 deg. C), which suggests a whisker of a win for 1998. The margin 0.01 is not statistically significant but what is significant is that for the last 12 years, there is no evidence of accelerating global warming trend. There is of course an underlying warming trend since 1979, but it is not linear, and basically flatlined over the last 12 years.

If 2010 is one of the warmest in recorded, then 2011 is likely to be one of the coldest as evident from Dr Roy Spencer's comments:

“The following plot shows global average sea surface temperatures from the AMSR-E instrument over the lifetime of the Aqua satellite, through Dec 31, 2010. The SSTs at the end of December suggest that the tropospheric temperatures in the previous graph still have a ways to fall in the coming months to catch up to the ocean, which should now be approaching its coolest point if it follows the course of previous La Nina’s”

“Global Warming” gets out of Control - Now creates “Global Cooling”

"We are told the earth continues to get warmer, yet it’s feeling a lot colder outside.”
And as it does, we may logically conclude so much for global warming and the prediction of snow’s extinction.  This probably led Dr Tim Ball, a respected climatologist to comment in his blog:
“Nasty old Mother Nature causes the demise by going about her normal business. As the old advertisement said, it’s not nice to fool with Mother Nature. The Northern Hemisphere winter is already proving once again that global warming is another undelivered government promise.”
Life apparently isn’t that straightforward.

Since 1998, the hottest year in recorded history, there is no statistically significant warming trend. And yet, none of the 24 models used by the IPCC view that as even possible.  Simply put, they are at odds with reality. So what do global warmists do? They precisely did what Albert Einstein warned about of science regressing into a religion whenever facts are changed to suit theory instead of the other way round. The result is, you guessed it - all this cooling is due to global warming! This led to Steven Goddard in his blog  to observe:
“No matter what the weather did or does, climate scientists blame it on global warming. Every event in nature is now seen as a sign of global warming. If it weren’t for CO2, the weather would be different and somehow better.”

Brrrr. Snow in New Delhi this winter - High Probability?

Last week, there was no let up in the cold conditions in New Delhi. The minimum temperature dropped further in the city to 4.7 degrees Celsius last Wednesday. This is in contrast to last year in December, were minimum temperatures touched only a low of 5.2 degrees during this month.

However, the all-time record for the lowest temperature December was registered in 1945, when it touched 1.1 degrees and that for January is -0.6 degrees recorded on January 16, 1935. In the recent past also near zero degree temperature (0.2 degree Celsius) was recorded on January 8, 2006 where Delhites woke-up surprised to see snow.

I’m dreaming of a White Christmas”: A Carol with Global Warmist Undertones

This has to be one of the most recognizable song lyrics out there during every Christmas season. White Christmas was actually written in 1940 by an Irving Berlin for the 1942 movie "Holiday Inn" starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire.

Songs often reflect the times. As seen from the graph, the period 1920-45 was a period the globe experienced warming at a scale matching those seen during 1977-2000. In fact the warmest year for USA remains 1934 and then only 1998 according to NASA data. A snow covered Christmas Day was a rarity then and Irving Berlin captured within the lyrics the nostalgia when snow was more common, perhaps explaining the sheer magnetism the song holds.

The planet undergoes a warm-cool oscillation on an average, every 25-30 years, correlating significantly with a climatic phenomenon called Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) as seen in the graph. Living almost in a quarter of a century within the same cycle will tend to prompt almost anybody to forget what it meant living in an opposite cycle.

As was the case of Irving Berlin in the 40s, it was also the same at turn of the millennium, wherein almost two decades of warming made most forget that a global cooling mode is next to come as part of earth’s natural climatic variability.  An article in the UK’s Independent newspaper with a dateline 20 March 2000 best illustrated this popular fallacy when it predicted snow will become extinct:
"According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become "a very rare and exciting event. Children just aren't going to know what snow is”

Cancun Climate "Deal: A Mirage of Progress

Not perfect, no treaty, not binding, fails to establish a firm date for negotiators to reach a conclusion on a new climate treaty, but a deal has been struck. The agreement says that developing countries will have to take "nationally appropriate actions" to curb their emissions by 2020. Hence, developing nations don't have to take targeted emission cuts like their developed counterparts. And the developed countries need not have any legally binding commitments.  A compromise to accommodate everyone (almost everyone, except for Bolvia)  ......The deal  made a grab for the lower hanging fruits and includes a Green Climate Fund that would give $133 billion a year in aid to poor nations by 2020, measures to protect tropical forests and ways to share clean energy technologies. These are sops to the developing countries for their part in the compromise. The only problem is that the details in operationalizing these measures are still not finalized.

Cancun Speeds up the end of Climate Hysteria

The low expectations of the Cancun UNFCC, COP 16 however misleads as it gives an impression that almost nothing will materialize as tangible outcomes. Judging from the first week proceedings, we climate sceptics are being forced to radically revise this faulty perception. With all humility we confess, we were wrong, so wrong. Never in our wildest imagination did we expect Cancun would set the ball rolling for the quicker end of this global warming scam.

Three developments in particular triggered our revision of perception. The most significant setback to climate alarmists was Japan’s refusal to extend their Kyoto commitments. The Guardian reported “The forthrightness of the statement took people by surprise, said one British official". Soon after Japan’s stunner came UN climate chief Christiana Figueres' clarification that Japan is only one of three countries among the 36 signatories that's opposed to extending their emission targets under the pact. She announced the others being Canada and Russia! The flood gates are now open to dump Kyoto! If this is not the beginning of the end of this scam what is?
