Rainfall

As on 05.06.2010 / 1200 UTC the following things are observed.
[1] The lower level winds are from NORTH WESTERLY direction. i.e the cross equtorial SWly winds in Arabian Sea gets deflected in North east Arabian sea and blows from NORTH WESTERLY direction. Even though it is NWly it is moisture laden air.
[2] To the west of Westerghats the lower NWly bounces on ghat and gives rainfall .
[3] Winds in the upper lower level NWly [ or spill over] makes a trough with the SOUTHERLY /SWLy winds prevailing at eastern side of western ghats and gives rainfall .
[4] Hyderabad [40.1], Kurnool[40.9], Bhubaneswar[41.0],Jamshedpur[43.3], Gaya[43.5], Nagpur[43.6], Ramagundam [44.4], Jasaguda[44.6] reported maximum temperature greater than 40.0 degree celsius.
The percentage of departure from Normal is +4 to +6.
[5] This will lead to a formation of inland and / or off shore trough or WML
This may give fairly widespread rainfall in the eastern side of the Western ghat

More about Kanyakumari (cape comorin) >> S-W monsoon first first hits at Cape Comorin

In continuation to our previous post .. A brief history of Kanyakumari district

Not only that my dear friends, even time immemorial Kanyakumari has its glory. It witnessed TSUNAMI in ancient times. There is a reference in 'SILAPATHIKARAM' about it. That PANNMALAI YADUKATHU KUMARICODUM PAKRULIYARUM KODUNKADAL KOLLA'
[i.e the stretch of Mountains and river Pakruli was devastated by Tsunami.]

Naikkeren the chief poet of the Head Tamil Sangam was a fisherman and he was from that NEITHAL area only.
If one travels exactly 180 degree south then the nearest land is Antarctica, some 10,450 km down south.
The South West monsoon first hits at Cape Comorin and later only extends to Andaman or Kerala.

It is the place of confluence of three oceans [1] Bay of Bengal [2] Arabian sea and [3] Indian Ocean. It is ideal place to monitor SWM / NEM winds. But there is NO DOPPLER WEATHER RADAR to monitor the SWM / NEM winds. Land-Ocean-Atmosphere interaction is important in studying weather. Kanyakumari has more mysterious things.

Cyclone "Phet" .. over Oman.. good satellite image

4-Jun-2010

Once a powerful Category 4 storm, Cyclone Phet had weakened to a Category 3 storm by the time it came ashore over Oman on June 4, 2010. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this photo-like image of the storm at 10:40 a.m. local time on June 4. By that time, Phet had degraded into a Category 1 storm with winds of about 75 knots (140 kilometers per hour or 86 miles per hour).
The storm’s swirling clouds cover most of northern Oman and all of the Gulf of Oman in this image. Though it is partially over land, the storm maintains a distinctive spiraling shape. In its northward trek over the Arabian Sea, Cyclone Phet gave Oman a glancing blow, cutting across the northeast edge of the country. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecast that the storm would re-emerge over the Gulf of Oman late on June 4 or early June 5, and move east towards Karachi, Pakistan, as a tropical storm.
According to news reports, Phet flooded Oman’s capital city, Masqat, but had not caused any casualties as of June 4.
The large image is the highest-resolution version of the image. The image is available in additional resolutions from the MODIS Rapid Response Team.

Update of Cyclone "Phet" @12pm IST

Update of..:
What cyclone? Where's the cyclone?At 996 mb,its no longer a cyclone.And where's the rain?Image of at 12 noon on Saturday.
Heading East, the system is fizzling out fast and rapidly. On entering North India as a low, it will precipitate some rain in the regions of Rajasthan, Punjab and Delhi by tomorrow.

What about the Monsoon? No change in our previous discussions and estimates. A sort of "cooling off" and "Re-Organisation" period is required,as the system will pass as a mini W.D. thru the Northern regions of the Sub-Continent.

This "waiting period" could be till 9th. June at the most for the west coast, North of Karnataka. Kerala should see the start of the revival from 8th.June. The forecasted wind direction for the 9th. June, raises the hopes of a revival by then. The Monsoon current, on gaining momentum by then, should progress into Karnataka and Goa by the 8th. and Mumbai by 10th. June.

No change in Mumbai Forecast: Increase in rains after the Monsoon arrives on 10th. June. (As per the sequence of events today).
