Cyclone Hudhud making Landfall over Visakahpatnam
The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm 'HUDHUD' over westcentral Bay of Bengal moved northwestwards with a
speed of about 15 kmph during the last 6 hours and lay centred at 0530 hours IST of 12th October 2014 near
Lat.17.2°N and Long 84.2°E, about 100 km southeast of Vishakhapatnam and 240 km southsouthwest of Gopalpur. The system would move northwestwards and cross north Andhra Pradesh coast close to
Visakhapatnam around noon of today 12th October 2014

Cyclone "HudHud" now a "Severe Cyclonic Storm
as per JTWC latest warning no.8
TROPICAL CYCLONE 03B (HUDHUD), LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 516 NM SOUTH
OF KOLKATA, INDIA, HAS TRACKED WEST-NORTHWESTWARD AT 06 KNOTS OVER
THE PAST SIX HOURS. ANIMATED MULTISPECTRAL SATELLITE IMAGERY (MSI)
SHOWS THE SYSTEM HAS MAINTAINED A DEEP CONVECTIVE SIGNATURE AND
TIGHTLY CURVED BANDING INTO A CONSOLIDATING LOW-LEVEL CIRCULATION
CENTER. THE INITIAL POSITION IS BASED ON A MICROWAVE EYE FEATURE ON A
091005Z SSMIS PASS WITH GOOD CONFIDENCE. THE INITIAL INTENSITY
IS BASED ON AN OVERALL ASSESSMENT OF AGENCY DVORAK ESTIMATES.
UPPER-LEVEL ANALYSIS INDICATES THE SYSTEM IS LOCATED IN A GENERALLY

Deep Depression intensifies into "Cyclone HUDHUD"
The Cyclonic Storm 'HUDHUD' over southeast Bay of Bengal moved westnorthwestwards and lay centered at
1730 hours IST of 8th October, 2014 near lat.12.8°N and long 91.0° E about 970 km southeast of Gopalpur and
1000 km eastsoutheast of Vishakhapatnam. The system would continue to move westnorthwestwards, intensify
further into a severe cyclonic storm during next 24 hours and into a very severe cyclonic storm during subsequent
36 hours. The system would cross north Andhra Pradesh & south Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam &
Gopalpur around noon of 12th October 2014.

Australian "Anti-storm"
High-pressure weather systems often bring fair weather and relatively clear skies. In early June 2012, a high off the coast of Tasmania did just that...and in spectacular fashion.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this view of a hole in a cloud formation at 3:00 p.m. local time (05:00 Universal Time) on June 5, 2012. The weather system over the Great Australian Bight cut out the oval-shaped hole from a blanket of marine stratocumulus clouds.
The cloud hole, with a diameter that stretched as far as 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) across, was caused by sinking air associated with an area of high pressure near the surface. Globally, the average sea-level pressure is about 1013 millibars; at the center of this high, pressures topped 1,040 millibars.
Sea-level pressure maps published by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology on June 5 showed that the shape of the cloud hole matched the shape of the high-pressure area. However, the center of high pressure and the cloud hole didn't match precisely; the center of the high was near the western edge of the clear area, about 100 kilometers from the cloud edge.
In general, winds blow outward and away from areas of high pressure. As a result, areas of high pressure pull air downward. As the air sinks, it also warms, increasing the rate of evaporation and making it difficult for the air to sustain clouds. Areas of low pressure, by contrast, pull air upward and generate clouds and stormy weather.
While low-pressure systems often produce circular cyclonic storms and clouds, high-pressure systems (which are sometimes called anticyclones) can yield large circular areas of clear skies. “You could call it an anti-storm,” quippedNASA Langley atmospheric scientist Patrick Minnis.
According to NASA Goddard atmospheric scientists Joanna Joiner and Arlindo da Silva, weather models simulated the cloud formation quite accurately. “We checked the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) forecast, and it really nailed the system,” Joiner said.

Recall of 1994 Severe cyclone - As Chennai fears from a Severe Cyclone Thane
Anyone has memory of 1994 Severe Cyclone that crossed Chennai) – It was the destructive cyclone to hit Chennai in last 20 years or even more.
This cyclone i witnessed it first hand…..to me this created havoc in Chennai. 24 cm rainfall in 24hrs coupled with 120 km/hr winds…. The cyclone scared the shit out of me. I watched the high winds with power cut without sleep. Still its scary. Hope Cyclone Thane doesnot make any destruction like this.

Chennai under Threat - Cyclone Thane, a Category 1 Storm as per ADT

Wow what a speedy intensification the storm has gone through last 6 hours. It took 12 hours for the storm to intensify from T 2.0(30 kts) to T.30 (45 kts). But it took just past 6 hrs to intensify from T 3.0 (45 kts) to T 4.0 (65 kts). Some of the Salient status of the storm are as follows.

Tropical Cyclone Yasi
Still soaking from months of rain and major floods, the residents of eastern Australia braced for the arrival of Cyclone Yasi in early February 2011. The storm was hovering in strength between category 4 and 5, the most damaging on the hurricane classification scale.
This natural-color image shows Yasi approaching the coast at 1:35 p.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time (03:35 Universal Time) on February 2. The image was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite.
At 10 p.m. local time (12:00 UTC) on February 2, shortly before Yasi reached the coast, the storm packed sustained winds of 250 kilometers (155 miles) per hour, with gusts to 305 kilometers (189 miles) per hour, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
News reports stated that the storm made landfall between Innisfall and Cardwell, south of Cairns, Queensland, around midnight on February 3. Storm surges along the coast were predicted to be as high as 9 meters (30 feet).

Category 5, Cyclone, Yasi is all set to ram into Queensland. Yasi is the strongest and biggest cyclone experienced in Australia since 1918, and its accompanying storm surges of up to 7m above high tide anticipated at Cardwell have forced the evacuation of 35,000 people from Townsville to Cairns.

Severe Cyclonic Storm BOB 03 (1994) (04B JTWC Name)
The first time i witnessed a storm fury. This storm crossed at mid night and i was just able to hear the wind sound it was terrifying. Most trees got uprooted in our colony.
