Kollur crosses 6000 mm and manages to lead SWM toppers till 27.08.2011

The race to be the wettest place in India during SWM 2011 is hotting up and we have only one month to go. September which is considered to be the least wettest during SWM has always thrown surprises. There are only few contenders to take the top spot, one of the surprise entrant is Kollur in Karnataka, which has managed to cross 6000 mm in August itself.

The break up of Kollur Rainfall are as follows -

  2. 2000 mm - 28 days (13 days for the 1000 mm)
  3. 3000 mm - 36 days (8 days for the 1000 mm)
  4. 4000 mm - 48 days (12 days for the 1000 mm)

  6. 6000 mm - 88 days (23 days for the 1000 mm)

The two giants have occupied the first two spots clearly shows that in TN, Chinna Kallar and Devala has no fair competitors. Upper Kodayar and Upper Bhavani have got very less compared to is normal rains.

Will Kollur cross the 10000 mm rainfall mark in 2011 - List of places other than Cherrapunji & Mawsynram which has achieved the feat is given below

As i was wondering whether Kollur which is having a amazing run of rainfall 4452 mm (from 01.06.2011 to 21.07.2011 - 51 days) from others places in 2011 is an one off event, whether there are other places which has got Extraordinary Rainfall (10000 mms in a year) previously. I have excluded Cherrapunji and Mawsynarm from the list since its routine for them to achieve 10000 mm every year . Mostly the data were only available upto the year 1970. Kindly provide me other instances where it has crossed 10000 mm/year

  • 1961 - 10933 mm (This includes an mind boggling 3046 mm rainfall in 11 days starting from July 1st to July 12. During July, 1961 Kottigehra got 5370 mm rainfall in one month)

  • 1959 - 12026 mm (During July, 1959 Hulikal got 5026 mm rainfall in one month)
  • 1961 - 12720 mm (During July, 1961 Hulikal got 4234 mm rainfall in one month)

Why Cherrapunji can not beat Kollur this year in South West Monsoon rainfall































































As you can see the graphs of heavy rainfall places from various zones of the country.

Cherrapunji gets its maximum rains from June to August, beyond that the rainfall decreases drastically. When comparing it to the rains of Southern giant Agumbe the pattern is similar Cherrapunji beats Agumbe by 500 mm in June and by 350 mm in July. The tables are turned in August where Agumbe gets whopping 750 mm more rainfall than Cherrapunji.

Even Gaganbawada and Sangameshwar which get good rains in August will have good chance to beat Cherrapunji this year in the SWM.

Hulikal is getting wetter than Agumbe - may now claim the title of ‘Cherrapunji of South’

In terms of annual rainfall over the last few years, Hulikal is far ahead of Agumbe. According to the statistics of the last five years, Hulikal has recorded more rain than Agumbe except in 2008.

Environmentalists and forest officials of the region feel deforestation in Tirthahalli taluk is the major cause for the decline in rainfall. Another contributory factor is the increase in area of monoculture forest at the cost of natural flora in various parts of the taluk.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Prof B M Kumaraswamy, member of Western Ghats Task Force, said planting of acacia, eucalyptus and other trees at the cost of natural forest in various parts of Tirthahalli taluk by the Mysore Paper Mill (MPM) has had disastrous effect on rainfall in Agumbe.

‘Green deserts’

“Monoculture tree plantations are ‘green deserts’ that bring no rainfall. They can never be considered as forests. There is a need to create awareness among people about the adverse effects of monoculture tree plantations on bio-diversity and climate change,” Kumaraswamy said. According to the recent studies, such plantations would pave way for the loss of biodiversity and increase in emission of carbon due to degradation of the previous ecosystem and disturbance of soil.

Realising the negative impact on biodiversity, the Forest Department has now banned plantation of trees such as acacia, eucalyptus on forest land. Raveesh, a resident of Agumbe told Deccan Herald that besides deforestation, there were other scientific reasons for the decline in rainfall. The temperature in the region is rising by the year, resulting in Agumbe losing its cool climate.

Venkatesan, Deputy Conservator of Forests, said: “I feel the MPM should not have been allowed to take up monoculture tree plantation in a place like Tirthahalli where you have natural forest.” A resident of Tirthahalli has approached the Karnataka High Court against the tree plantation taken up by MPM. A committee has been formed to submit the report on the impact of such plantation on bio diversity.

Record Rainfall in Kimberley, Australia

January might still have four days to go, but a remote Kimberley settlement has recorded the highest monthly rainfall figure ever in WA. The Bureau of Meteorology's gauge at Kuri Bay has so far recorded 1339.5mm - at least - this month, beating a 94-year-old tally.


It might have been even higher, but the rainfall gauge overflowed on January 11, before the Bureau's observer was able to check the gauge. The observer recorded 388.6mm for that day. The previous best was at another Kimberley site, Roebuck Plains, in January 1917, when 132.7mm fell. Kuri Bay's previous best was 1144.9mm in January 1974. This month's total is more than three times the 407.4mm January average for Kuri Bay.

WA regional climate services manager Glenn Cook said the record-breaking total was due to the monsoon season in a La Nina weather pattern year, and warmer than average waters off the north coast. However, Kuri Bay, and WA, have some way to go to match the Australian record, a whopping 5387mm, or more than 5 metres, at Bellenden Ker, Queensland, in January 1979.

Bellenden Ker records an annual average rainfall of 8,312 mm (327.2 in), making it the wettest meteorological station in Australia. It also holds the record for the highest rainfall in a calendar year of 12,461 mm (490.6 in) in 2000 and the highest rainfall in Australia for a calendar month of 5,387 mm (212.1 in) in January 1979.In 2006, Bellenden Ker received rainfall, 9,800 mm (390 in) than any other part of Australia. This was primarily due to two severe tropical cyclones passing close to the mountain.

Jeddah receives 111 mm in 3 hours and exceeds Nov 2009 flood accumulation

JEDDAH: In just three hours Wednesday morning Jeddah was inundated with 111 millimeters of rain, the King Abdulaziz University's (KAU) Meteorology Department said. Mansour Al-Mazrouie, head of the department, said Wednesday's volume of rainfall exceeded the 90 mm recorded in four hours during the Nov. 25, 2009 flash floods that killed at least 123 people and damaged thousands of vehicles and homes.

The average amount of rain during the winter months (November to January) is about 51 mm. He said what Jeddah is presently witnessing is due to climate change. As of Wednesday afternoon, reports of three electrocuted teens, hundreds of stranded students and a broken dam were pouring in from different parts of the city. Civil Defense officials, however, said there were yet no reports of any deaths related to the flooding.

Eyewitnesses told Arab News that East Jeddah was swamped and floodwater was rushing west toward the Red Sea, turning streets into rivers once again. Witnesses say Um Al-Khair dam has been breached, flooding nearby neighborhoods. Water in Al-Hamra district was waist-deep in some places and some schools were keeping students from leaving. The heavy downpour did not begin until after students went to class where they are currently taking end-of-semester exams.

Unconfirmed reports came in saying three female students were electrocuted at KAU. It was not immediately clear if any of the young women were killed in the accident. Palestine Street, Madinah Road and Wali Al-Ahad Street were either flooded or jammed with traffic. Cars were seen floating in some places. Three hundred students at Dar Al-Hekma were still held up inside the college. At Effat College the situation was the same. Civil Defense advised tudents not to leave the premises and wait till the floods subside. Civil Defense officials, meanwhile, urged the public to stay home if there was no urgency to venture outside.

The Batticaloa District has received a rainfall of 1606.2 mm

The Batticaloa District has received a rainfall of 1606.2 mm just in 42 days during the period from 1st December 2010 to 12th January 2011, almost equal to its total annual rainfall. The total rainfall experienced in Batticaloa from January 1st to 12th of this month is 894.8 mm.

The annual total rainfall of the district was 1650.9 mm. Similarly at Trincomalee a rainfall of 1030.6 mm. has been received during the same period while its annual rainfall was 1580.1 mm.

This unusual weather pattern can mostly be attributed to the intense La Nina condition prevailing in the tropical Pacific Ocean since April 2010 with similar abnormal weather conditions being observed over various parts of the world such as Australia, Europe, Brazil and Iran etc.

Rains this season create records in Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur & Dehradun

Mumbai - breaking 50 year record

Monsoon has created a record of sorts this year. The rainfall witnessed is well on course to be ranked as the highest ever recorded in the city. There have been a number of intense rain spells, yet the city life has not been thrown out of gear even once. The data of monsoon witnessed between 1999 and 2009 indicates that there had been at least two rain days every year when the city life was halted, a senior official from the civic disaster management cell said. The Santa Cruz observatory has witnessed 3,309.2 mm rain this year, while the Colaba observatory has received 3,160.5 mm. A Met department officer said that with there being still some time before the monsoon withdraws, the rainfall-recorded is on course to be the highest ever. According to a senior official, the Santa Cruz observatory had recorded about 3,400mm rainfall in 2005, the year when an unprecedented rain event on July 26 saw a downpour of 944 mm. The second-highest rainfall recorded by the suburban observatory was 3,281.7 mm in 1958. The Met officials also suggested that the Colaba rainfall has already surpassed all rain records set in the past 50 years.

Dehra Dun - breaking 44 year record

The monsoon rainfall broke a 44-year-old record in Dehra Dun by registering a whopping 3088 mm of rainfall this season. Met Director Anand Sharma told PTI that the previous highest record was in 1966 when the Doon valley recorded 2930 mm of rainfall. Before 1966, records regarding monsoon rains are not available, he said. With heavy rains lashing Dehra Dun, several rivers in the valley were on spate which include Rispana, Bindal and Asan. Nine of the total 13 districts of Uttarakhand have received excess rainfall this monsoon season.

Jaipur - breaking 14 year record

Breaking a 14-year record, Jaipur received 781.2mm rain this year till Wednesday. Going by the Met department’s prediction, as the monsoon is still active in the state and will last till the end of the month, the figure is likely to change in the coming few days. According to officials of Indian Meteorological Department, Jaipur receives around 500 mm rainfall in normal circumstances. The last time it had rained so much was in 1996, when the showers had been plentiful to the point of becoming an abnormality. Jaipur city had then received 850 mm rain between June and September. Looking at the conditions of this year, Jaipur is heading towards and abnormal spell of monsoon. "The district has already received 40% rain in excess of the normal this year," an irrigation official said. The comparison becomes obvious with last year's rainfall chart when Jaipur received less than 300 mm rain and had to be included among the scarcity-hit districts of the state.

Delhi - breaking 32 year record

Records shows this is the wettest monsoon in Delhi since 1978. Rainfall since June 1 has touched 1004mm higher than 965.1mm recorded during the monsoon of 1978. Sunday's rain also took Delhi's rainfall during September to 250.6mm, the highest since 1998 when 280.4 mm was recorded. Last year, the figure had settled at 588 mm. Delhi recorded 455.1 mm rain in August, more than double its normal average of 225.8 mm. With 10 days remaining in the month, September too is poised to break records having recorded around 280mm more than normal.

Debate - Rainiest places in the world

Most people agree that the rainiest places on earth are Cherrapunji, India, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Australia, Colombia, in the Cameroon Mountain area of Africa, Kauia, Hawaii. Interestingly, I learned while researching that there is a difference between the rainiest places and the wettest places on earth. One would think that the water falling down would soak the soil to a point of saturation that could be called wet; but apparently not

It must be then that in some places the rain falls but it either runs off quickly - water runs from high to low when cool - or it is quickly evaporated into the atmosphere by the sun. Adding to that would be the wind currents that could divert the rain farther away from its downward thrust. How do the selected areas get nominated for the rainiest, the driest, having the longest drought and so on? It is the yearly rainfall averaged that gives them this distinction. In Tutunedo, Colombia the average rainfall is 463.4 inches. There it probably does not rain every day, but when it does it produces more water, In Mount Wai-Ali'Ali'in Kauai, Hawaii it rains on the average 350 days out of 365.

Opposite these facts are some no-rain statistics: From October 1903 to January 1918 it did not rain in Africa, Chile. That means that for fourteen years they were without rain. A similar but lesser deprivation happened in the US October 12th 1912 to November 8th, 1914 in Bagdad, California. The highest annual rainfall in Europe is Crkvica, a little town near Sarajevo in Bosnia.

Columbia is a wet country since it has much rainfall and apparently most of the rain is contained where it falls. Meteorologist explains it this way and label the phenomenon mega diverse. What that means is the country has mountains, deserts, tropical regions, steppes - flat lands amidst mountainous regions - giving it the right kind of weather for rain. In particular, Andaguya, a Colombian town that is on the equator and has an almost constant temperature year round. They get lots of rain. Yet, elsewhere in Colombia, there's not a drop to drink although they have a record rainfall. Quibdo, Columbia, a lowland area near the Panama border, a gateway between that country and South Central America has a record rainfall but has water shortages.

Cameroon, Africa, near the Cameroon Mountains averages about 400 inches of rain a year in some parts. The area is conducive to rain fall with the tropical regions, ocean, forests, grasslands, deserts and mountains. A similar situation happens in India. Meghalya has enough rainfall and is wet but it has little fit to drink. This area holds the record for the most rainfall in one year. In 1860-1861 it was over 900 inches.

Why does it rain daily in the wettest place in the world? In Mount Waialeala Kauai, Hawaii has special place for rain. It all related to geological conditions with a conical shape, is near an ocean and has the perfect trade winds that are conducive to rain. Llora Colombia has coastlines on the Pacific and Caribean Ocean is, according to weather watcher, a geologic freak with a daily 1.5 inch rainfall. It holds the honor of being the world's wettest place.

You would expect the rainforest to be one of the rainiest places of the world, but it falls far behind in its average rainfalls. The rainforest minimally receives between 68 and 78 inches of rain a year, while the rainiest places all receive well over 400 inches per year. Perhaps they should rename the rainforests as dryforests in comparison to these wetlands.

The actual rainiest place in the world is arguable. It depends on what factors you take into consideration. Should the rainiest place be the one with the highest average rainfall or should it be the city with the most rainy days? The following three places have all claimed to be the rainiest place in the world, so I'll give you their statistics and facts and let you decide depending on which factors you think should be taken into consideration.

Cherrapunji holds two Guinness World Records relating to rainfall. The first one is the highest rainfall in one year, which was 904.9 inches between August 1860 and July 1861. It also holds the record for the highest rainfall within one month, which was 366 inches in July 1861. On average, it rains about 450 inches a year in Cherrapunji, most of which falls during the monsoon season of their winter months. The immense rainfall of Cherrapunji is caused primarily by the Khasi Hills. The monsoon clouds fly into the town from the Bay of Bengal, and the Khasi Hills then break up and condense the clouds, which leads to the high rainfall.

Mawsynram is located only 9 kilometers west of Cherrapunji, so it shares a similar climate. Here, it rains about 472 inches in an average year, but once again, the majority of this rainfall comes during the monsoon season. The Khasi Hills is what causes it to rain so much in Mawsynram as well, and the continual uplift of air over the hills makes the rainfall continuous during the monsoon season. One problem with Mawsynram is that it does not have its own meteorological office. Because of this, it is hard to obtain official records to prove that it is one of the rainiest cities, so Cherrapunji is often considered wetter than Mawsynram.

Mount Waialeale is clearly not a place you would want to honeymoon, since it rains up to 350 days a year here. In the average year, there is 467 inches of rainfall, but it is a much more consistent rain than the two cities in India. It is definitely the rainiest place in the United States, but it also claims to be the rainiest place in the world. The rain here is caused by the location and shape of the island. Because of where it is located, it is more exposed to frontal systems in the Pacific Ocean during winter. The island also has a circular shape, which allows all sides to be hit by clouds of moisture and moisture itself. Mount Waialeale is also known for its steep cliffs, which cause clouds to rapidly rise and then drop a lot of rain in one area.

As these three places battle it out for the rainiest place in the world, here are a few other rainy spots:

Depending on the region, precipitation derives from different areas and can vary greatly. In the United Kingdom most rain is driven into the country by the south-western trade winds along the warm gulf stream currents. The western coastal regions can receive up to 40 inches of rain per year at sea level, and up to 100 inches in the mountains.

In the United States, the city of Seattle, Washington is well known for its rainy climate. However, despite its rainy climate, the city experiences less rainfall (37 inches per year) on average than New York City (46 inches per year). Seattle does have more cloudy days (201 per year) than New York City (152). The wettest city in the 48 contiguous United States is Mobile, Alabama, with an average rainfall of 67 inches per year. Alaska’s temperate rainforests of the southeast get an average of 160 inches per year.

Although Australia is the world’s driest continent, more than 300 inches of rain falls on Mount Bellendon Ker in the northeast each year. 472 inches were recorded in the year 2000. Melbourne’s climate is similar to that of Seattle, Washington in the USA, but only gets about 25 inches per year. Sydney receives an average of 48 inches of rain per year.

Cherrapunji, a town on the southern slopes of the Himalayas in Shillong, India is one of the wettest places on Earth. The average annual rainfall is about 450 inches per year. The highest recorded rainfall was 904.9 inches in one year in 1861. Although Mawsynram, Meghalaya, India has an estimated yearly rainfall of 467.4 inches, Cherrapunji is known as the wettest, as rainfall records were never supervised properly at Mawsynram. It should be noted that Cherrapunji is also considered the wettest area on Earth as most of its rainfall occurs during the monsoon seasons.

The town of Lloró, situated in Chocó, Colombia, is considered the place with the most rainfall, averaging 523.6 inches per year. Along with Cherrapunji in Asia, the town of Tutunendo in Colombia, South America is also one of the wettest on the planet. In 1974 the town recorded 86.3 feet of rainfall, the largest annual rainfall measured in Colombia. Unlike Cherrapunji, which gets most of its rain between April and September, Tutunendo receives rain throughout the year. Tutunendo has an average of 280 days of rain per year, of which 68% of the rain falls at night. Some storms in Chocó have been known to drop as much as 20 inches of rain in one day.

Before you venture off on vacation or even choose your destination, common sense dictates that you should consult the local weather authority. Many trips have ended in utter ruin because travelers, in their sheer innocence, were oblivious to monsoon season or the prevalence of sandstorms at a particular time of year. So call ahead. Consult an Almanac. And unless you have some specific scientific or sadistic need, avoid these precipitation-prone places. With many at over an inch a day, they clearly rank as the rainiest inhabited regions in the world.

Although the country of Bosnia and Herzegovina is devoid of coastline, save for a scant shore of the Adriatic, it nonetheless receives a fair amount of rain, most notably in Crkvica. The town in Bosnia, just northwest of Sarajevo, consistently receives the highest annual average precipitation in Europe.

Another megadiverse country, perhaps more so than any other on the planet, is Australia. With desert, mountains, ocean and tropical rainforests, the country continent is unlike any other. The area of Bellenden Ker and indeed, the mountain of the same name, is a World Heritage Rainforest zone. A short drive from the city of Cairns, the region is lush, rife with exotic plant and animal life and indeed a victim of mass precipitation.

Colombia proves to be wet all over once again with the town of Quibdo. Over 100,000 people live in the capital of the Choco Department, as the national divisions are known as. On the border of Panama and indeed, the gateway between South and Central America, the department and town receive some of the most zany weather in Colombia. Unfortunate because in addition – or perhaps because of which – Quidibo has some of the worst social conditions and economic track records in the country. In point of fact, despite record rainfall every year, the lowland town still manages to suffer from water shortages.

Cameroon has a reputation for being one of the most exotic and beautiful nations in Africa. Indeed, it encompasses the principal features of the continent on a small scale, with hyper diversity in a region about the size of California. As a result of course, parts of Cameroon receive super heavy rainfall. This tends to be the case when you have ocean coastline, tropical forests, grasslands, deserts and mountains within close proximity to each other. At the base of Mount Cameroon and within plain view of the Bight of Biafra, Debundscha receives over 400 inches of rain a year.

Another region with rainfall levels well above 400 inches, Cherrapunji shares another notorious distinction with other wet areas. In utter bewilderment and stark contrast to the weather, the town in the state of Meghalya confronts epic water shortage problems. Geography conspires to make Cherrapunji so wet and also devoid of potable water by the same token. At the confluence of the Kashi Hills and Bay of Bengal, the town receives both north and south monsoon showers that pound the area in a flash, only to flood down the plains of Bangladesh. No suprise then that Cherrapunji holds the record for most rainfall in one year at over 900 inches back in 1860-61.

Another village in the Kashi Hills in the state of Meghalya, Mawsynram proves once again that India is a complex and diverse country. A quick drive from Cherrapunji, the town records indicate more annual rainfall, although disputes about data accuracy have been rife as both regions fight for rainfall supremacy. Whatever the case may be, Mawsynram appears to have a more favorable – or is that cursed? – position in terms of proximity to the Bay of Bengal and steep incline of the Kashi Hills, which allows humid, moist air to ascend and in turn, blanket the area with rain.

Although not exactly a residential area, the region around Mount Waialeale and indeed the summit, receives a ton of precipitation on a habitual basis. Tourism officials in Hawaii love to boast that this is the wettest place on the planet, although some in India and Colombia take issue with the claim. Whatever the case may be, the rainfall in Kauai is notable for the fact that it occurs with such daily regularity. Mount Waialeale bears the brunt of the precipitation because of a conical shape and pure geographical position relative to the ocean and trade winds. Although open to tourism, there are obvious physical impediments here due to the amount of rain that falls every day. In other words, the ground is super wet.

The town and municipality of Lloro is another area within the Choco Department of Colombia prone to rain. A lot of rain. With coastlines on the Pacific and Caribbean, unique in the country, the area is an ecological freak of sorts and as a result, the victim of zany phenomena. Average annual precipitation in the town of Lloro is 523.6 inches, which ranks it first in terms of wet world zones. With over 7,000 inhabitants, one has to wonder how people here cope with almost 1.5 inches of rain a day.

Weather records have been kept for years and years at all sorts of places so you'd have thought it would be really easy to discover where the wettest place in the world is. Guess again - meteorologists can't for the life of them seem to agree on where the wettest place in the world is! Of course the thing to remember is that we're looking at average rainfall, i.e. consistent wetness, rather than one year with a huge rainfall total. Of course other ways of judging the wettest place in the world would be to look at the number of days or hours with precipitation. Sadly I've not unearthed much in this department - De Bilt in the central Netherlands gets on average about 604 hours precipitation per year (there's 8,760 hours in a year) and in 2001 had 800 hours precipitation. Mount Wai-‘ale-‘ale, Kauai, one of the Hawaiian islands - the weather station here is 1569 metres high and records on average 13,000mm to 11,684mm rain per year, depending on which source you believe. Either way this is really wet!!!!! Rain falls on between 335 and 360 days per year, again depending on which source you believe. Nearby sea level sites, meanwhile, record around 500mm rain per year.

As you can see, sources vary considerably as to how much rain falls here. Bodin (1978) quotes 11,684mm per year figure as being the 1912-45 average, an average that quite possibly will have changed since then, whilst The National Climatic Data Center quotes this figure as a 30 year average there, but fails to mention which 30 period was covered. The Weather Network and The Guiness Book of Weather Records (Holford 1977) quotes 11,455mm rain per year, whilst Ahrens (2000) quotes 11,680mm as the average annual rainfall at Mount Wai-'ale-'ale and Kroll (1995) claims 13,000mm falls there.

Similarly, The Weather Network and the Guiness Book of Weather Records quote 335 days with rain here whilst Simons (1996) suggests that rain falls on an incredible 360 days per year here. Nice.

Mount Tutenendo, Columbia - records 11,770mm to 12,045mm rain per year, again depending on which source you choose to believe (Simons 1996, Focus Magazine 1997), and there's just 275mm difference between sources.

Lloro, Columbia - estimated 13,299mm rain per year (Raikhel 2000). According to The National Climatic Data Center this is an estimated amount and in fact Quibdo in Columbia, which is at a lower altitude than Lloro, is with an average annual rainfall of 8,991.6mm rain South America's wettest place.

Cherrapunji,north-eastern India - was thought for many years to be the wettest place in the world. Here 10,820mm rain (Holford 1977) falls on average in a year, well short of the amounts that fall at the other contenders. Unlike Hawaii and Columbia where the rain falls throughout the whole year, Cherrapunji gets most of its rain during the 'south-west monsoon', or wet season, between June and August. Cherrapunji does hold the record for the wettest month on record, recording 9,296mm in July 1861. Actually, between 1860 and 1862 Cherrapunji was incredibly wet; between August 1st 1860 and July 31st 1861 (which overlaps parts of 2 wet seasons) 26,467mm rain fell. In the calender year 1861 22,987mm rain fell, of which 22,454 fell between April and September.

Mawsynram, India - is quoted by the The National Climatic Data Center as having an annual average rainfall of 11,871mm and 11,877mm by BBC Weather, more than any other contender except Lloro in Columbia. Mawsynram is just a few kilometres away from Cherrapunji.

Ambala has received around 600 mm rainfall in 3 days

Ambala, around 45 km from Chandigarh, has received around 600 mm rainfall in the last three days.

Major roads and rail tracks are flooded. Rivulets like Tangri near Ambala and Markanada were flowing above the danger mark. Few cracks have also appeared in the SYL canal in Kurukshetra where the water has crossed the danger mark and has entered many villages.

"More enquiry counter to be opened at Ambala , the officer should show more maturity, " said Manish Tiwari , CPRO , Northern Railways.

Passengers in the Ambala Railway station are stranded as confusion still prevails as a result of the floods. "I have just arrived from Hissar, the train will start only by late evening. They may also cancel some trains, but what we expect is that at least they keep updating us about the trains services", said a stranded passenger.

‘There was three to four feet of water at many places in Ambala, disrupting power supply and paralyzing normal life. Now the situation is under control,’ Ambala Deputy Commissioner S.P. Srow said.

Ambala, which is also a major army and air force base, remained under one to two feet of water. ‘No one from the administration is helping us. We don’t even have drinking water. All our household things have been damaged by water,’ said Savitri Devi, a resident of Ambala

Chennai: One of the coolest June in decades


If you enjoyed the weather more this June, you had good reason to feel as if spring was in the air. It was the third coolest June in 42 years with the mercury dipping below the average for 14 days in the month, said Met officials. “This June, the average fell from 37 to 35.2 degrees Celsius. In 1991, it was 34.3 degrees and 34.9 degrees in 1996,” said YEA Raj, deputy director general, regional meteorological centre. Since 2005, the monthly average has been higher.

“For the first time in recent memory, I decided to make my family spend May and June in the city, and it is a decision I do not regret,” said Priya Anandan, who usually spends the holidays in Ooty. Although children said they felt cheated because they couldn’t play outdoor cricket due to rains, most others were thankful. “Normally, there is self-rationing of water in our apartment complex but due to the rains there was no disruption in supply,” said N Mohan of RA Puram.

With the onset of the southwest monsoon, local thunder storm activity brought in a good amount of rainfall to the city. Met officials said the arrival of cyclone Laila and the rainfall in the wake of its withdrawal was the beginning of a good run on the weather front. The city enjoyed nine days of rainfall of varying degrees this June. Although nowhere near the record 698 mm seen in 1996, Nungambakkam registered 137 mm and Meenambakkam 130. The city’s normal is around 40 mm for June, added Raj. In 1991, the city received 264 mm in June.

The thunderstorm activity was not restricted to the city alone, with all but three districts receiving excess rainfall. Against the normal of 42.1 mm, the state received 78.5 mm, an 87% excess. “The last month has been exceedingly good for the state. The trend is likely to continue in July as well, and we can expect more rains and cooler days,” added Raj.

Rainfall characteristics of Kerala


Kerala can be divided into three unique rainfall regions, each region having a similar covariance structure of annual rainfall. Stations north of 10.N (north Kerala) fall into one group and they receive more rainfall than stations south of 10.N (south Kerala). Group I stations (table 2) receive more than 65% of the annual rainfall during the south-west monsoon period, whereas stations falling in Group II (table 3) receive 25-30% of annual rainfall during the pre-monsoon and the north-east monsoon periods. Group III stations (table 4) with IIIrd factor as the primary loading, i.e., IIIrd factor greater than Ist and IInd factor.
The meteorology of Kerala is profoundly influenced by its orographical features, however it is difficult to make out a direct relationship between elevation and rainfall. Local features of the state as reflected in the rainfall distribution are also clearly brought out by the study

There is a lack of direct relationship between the height of a station and its rainfall from this study. The spatial variability of mean annual precipitation depends upon the topographic factors like exposure of the station to the prevailing wind, elevation, orientation, and slope of the mountain.The study is, however, limited to the number of rainfall stations available and a better network of stations in the region will reflect more local-scale phenomena. The results are useful for mesoscale and synoptic scale atmospheric modelling.

Harnai (Maharashtra) recorded 42 cm in 24hrs

Harnai recorded 42.1 cm ending 8.30am on 19.06.2010. The one day record for Harnai is 80cm recorded on 05.08.1968. The record for highest rainfall (24hrs) for Maharasthra is held by Vihar lake (Mumbai) 104.9 cm followed by 94.4 cm at Santacruz (Mumbai) both were recorded on 27 July 2005.
