Fresh ‘active’ westerly keeps date with hills of northwest India

Upper reaches of northernmost and northwest Kashmir and adjoining slopes have all been ‘whitened up’ by a fresh ‘active’ western disturbance keeping date with the forecasts early this (Tuesday) morning.
Associated clouding and moisture has enveloped Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and parts of west Uttar Pradesh even as a feed streaked in from north Gujarat and across adjoining southeast Rajasthan.
The clouding has brought down the maximum temperatures to below normal by 3 to 5 deg Celsius over many parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand towards the east.
An India Meteorological Department (IMD) update said on Tuesday morning that the active western disturbance would affect the western Himalayan region from today (Tuesday) onwards and the plains of northwest India mainly from Thursday to Saturday.
A weather warning valid for Friday said that isolated thunder squalls or hailstorms may occur over the plains of northwest India. Satellite imagery on Tuesday morning showed the presence of convective (rain-bearing) clouds over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, around the peninsular tip and south Bay of Bengal.
A short-term outlook valid until Friday for specific regions said that scattered rain or snowfall would occur over Jammu and Kashmir today and increase thereafter. Isolated rain or snowfall would occur over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand from today and increase thereafter.
Over the plains, isolated rain or thundershowers has been forecast for Punjab and west Rajasthan on Thursday, with the rain belt expected to scale up thereafter and extend to many parts of northwest India.
In the south, isolated rain or thundershowers would occur over Tamil Nadu and Kerala until Wednesday morning and increase thereafter.
