  1. Reunion island in Madagascar heaviest 24 hours rain in world!
    It is very ironical
    (a) Reunion is an island of 970 square miles in the Indian Ocean, about 400 miles east of Madagascar. In March, 1952,
73.6 inches 2000mm of rain was dumped in 24hours!
Ironical dry Baobab Tree grows here!

    (b)Mumbai - Bombay -India
In 26 July 2005, 39.1 inches 1000mm of rain was dumped in 24hours! Heaviest 24 hours rain ever recorded in India.

    What causes extreme rain patterns?
    Can this be predicted?

Heavy RF on Mumbai on 26 July 2005.
On that day Santa Cruz in North Mumbai recorded 94.4 cm. The Vihar Lake reported 104.5cm. Where as Colaba in south Mumbai recorded 7.3 cm only.
The extraordinary rainfall was localised over a narrow region of 20-25 km in North Mumbai. The heaviest down pour occurred between 1430 hrs IST and 2030 hrs IST. The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission [TRMM] satellite also captured this event.
The other chief amounts of rainfall reported were
    (a)Bhanundup: 81 cm
    (b) Dharavi : 49 cm
    (c) Malabar Hills & Colaba : 7cm
    This shows HIGH spatial variability.
An overall synoptic features on that day 26.7.2005 and one day prior to it can be summarised as follows
[1] The SW monsoon was active to vigorous over WEST Coast.
[2] Low pressure on 23.7.2005 over NW Bay moved INLAND and intensified into WML on 24.7.2005.
[3] As it moved further WEST strong westerly monsoon winds from Arabian Sea engulfed WML. Widespread rainfall over North Konkan and Goa coast realised on that day.
[4] With strong monsoon winds in the back ground it intensified further and moved north wards
[5] Mumbai experienced exceptionally very heavy rainfall.

Of course NWP can predict to some extend. Proper regional model with data assimilation technics and other advanced weather tools it may be possible.
