What I love about the monsoons....

The monsoon always brings back a flood of memories of monsoons past. And so it was this time as well, bringing to mind the things one loved about this season in Chennai:
• Going to sleep with the sound of the wind and rain soothing you
• Feeling the spray of heavy rain in your face as you stand in the doorway and watch it come down
• Curling up in bed with a good book and a glass of hot chocolate on Sunday afternoons
• Hot tea and samosas at tea time on a rainy day
• Watching the rain dance on top of the parapet wall before disappearing in spray
• Cycling in the rain
• Rain holidays
• Playing a game of 'holly golly' in the rain
• Roiling cloudscapes

Northeast monsoon in Vietnam and Thailand

Fall is the time in which the Northeast Monsoon returns to South and Southeast Asia following a summer hiatus. Onset of prevailing northeasterly winds is often marked by extreme cloudbursts wherever such wind would blow, at once, from water to land and up slope. Such a setting can be found in Vietnam as well as the eastern Malay Peninsula, which is shared by Thailand and Malaysia. This week, the Thailand share of the Peninsula has been hammered by inundating outbursts of rain. One hard-hit town is Hakhon Si Thammarat, where the aggregate of rainfall since Sunday was 21.8 inches (55 cms) as of Thursday night, local time. Still high, but less extreme, was the fall of 11.2 inches (28 cms) on the island of Ko Samui. The 21.8 inches of rain almost exactly matches the normal monthly rainfall for Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Diwali Greetings

Happy Diwali! -- clear day

Ya, as expected this diwali is going to be a CLEAR sky day. This is good for the festive mood, but not good for chennai people.. WHy?

We had received very less rain during this HEAVY season. Still the southern part of tamilnadu is experiencing one of very good seasons.

Things might change again during this weekend(sunday)... a heavy formation is covering the south-east bay of bengal. This might develop into a Cyclone OR atleast a Deep Depression. Take a look.

Diwali

Diwali festival is a 5 day Hindu festival in India which occurs on the fifteenth day of Kartika. Diwali when translated means "rows of lighted lamps" and the occasion is also referred to as the Festival of Lights.
During Diwali, Indian homes are cleaned and windows are opened to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. Lamps, lights and candles are lit as a greeting to Goddess Laksmi.

Gifts are exchanged and sweets, festive meals are prepared during Diwali. Because there are many castes and regions in India, there are myriad manifestations of the Diwali festival.

In some places, the festival begins with Dhanteras, a day set aside to worship Laksmi. In the Indian culture, wealth is not viewed as a corruptive power. Instead, a wealthy person is considered to have been rewarded for good deeds of a past life, i.e karma.

On the second day of the festival, Kali, the goddess of Strength, is worshipped.

On the 3rd day ( the last day of the year in the lunar calendar), lamps are lighted and shine brightly in homes. The lamp symbolizes knowledge.

The fourth day of Diwali falls on the first day of the lunar New Year. At this time, old business accounts are settled and new books are opened. The books are worshipped in a special ceremony by Indian priests and participants are encouraged to remove anger, hate, and jealousy from their lives.

On the last day (Balipratipada) of the festival, Bali, an ancient Indian king, is recalled and remembered. Bali destroyed the centuries old philosophies of the society. However, in addition to this, he is remembered for being a generous and kind person. Hence, the significance of this day is to see the good in others, including enemies.

The Jain communities of India celebrate Diwali as a New Year's Day. Lord Mahavira, the founder of Jainism, attained his Nirvana on the day of Diwali.
Sikhs celebrate Diwali to express joy at the return of the sixth Guru to Amritsar in 1620; Emperor Jahangir had imprisoned him along with 52 Hindu kings.

The Guru was granted freedom but refused to leave until the kings were also released.

Diwali is by far the most enthusiastically enjoyed festival in India. People of different nationalities, races, religions and backgrounds come together to share their joys generating a feeling of universal brotherhood and inter-religious harmony

Clear start on the eve of Diwali

Today morning it was very clear and sunny to start with, but now... it has become HAZY and THIN clouds can be seen covering almost full of chennai.
