Meteorologists are notoriously reluctant to accept climate change. Why so? Theirs is a profession that studies the weather, which is akin to what climate scientists do by studying the weather over relatively long periods. Of course, they are not as educated as climate scientists who have PhD's in their field, while many meteorologists have college degrees unrelated to meteorology. Meteorologists know the pitfalls of being wrong when making a forecast, however, they do not seem to realize that the conclusions of climate scientists are not the same as saying there is a 50% chance of precipitation tomorrow. The International Panel on Climate Change or IPCC put a probability that it is more than 90% likely that man is causing climate change. Do meteorologists, weathermen to use a more prosaic term, just feel inferior to climate scientists or just why are they so dismissive about climate change?

A western disturbance moving across north-west India added a spring to its feet overnight on Wednesday to create a lot of weather over east India.

It set up contrasting weather in its rear and in front – freezing temperatures in the north-west but rising warm air up front that rustled up hailstorm and thundershowers.

VIOLENT WEATHER

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that the violent weather would continue to hold over the east India on Thursday and Friday. This is being attributed to a virulent upper air cyclonic circulation that broke away from the parent disturbance.

The IMD has warned of hailstorm for Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, east Madhya Pradesh, north Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand on Thursday too. The violent weather would then shift to sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh and stay put until Friday.

GROUND FROST

Meanwhile, north-west would see cold Arctic air invade the plains left behind by the outgoing western disturbance to set off cold wave over Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Mercury might plunge to spark ground frost in some parts of Punjab, Haryana and north Rajasthan.

But the conditions would get reversed towards the weekend with the arrival of the next western disturbance.

This would expectedly lift up minimum temperatures over north-west India and offer some respite from the frigid conditions.

COLD TO EAST

Cold wave would shift to east since the preceding western disturbance would have just left the region and further away across the border. The 24 hours ending Wednesday morning saw cold wave conditions prevail over Gujarat and parts of Rajasthan and Punjab.

Even parts of central and north peninsular India including Konkan, north coastal Andhra Pradesh and coastal Orissa saw low mercury.

WELCOME SHOWERS

Forecast for the next two days indicated welcome showers for Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. This is because of southeasterlies from the Bay of Bengal fanning into south peninsular India being directed north-northeast along a trough of low-pressure lying close to Sri Lanka coast and extending into north Tamil Nadu.

Will the Great River Rhine freeze over this month?

The Rhine is the longest river within Germany and is known for its beauty, with medieval castles and lovely wine villages along its banks. The river begins in Switzerland. Passing through the city of Basel, it forms the border between Germany and France, flows into Germany and the Netherlands and ends in the North Sea.

When rivers freeze, water turns dark, swirls thick; moves slow before hardening into ice. Though some rivers tend to freeze over easily, some do not. It all depends on the kinetic energy (KE) of the moving water. The higher its (KE), the more unlikely it freezes. The Rhine is one such river.

Nashed, Poster Boy of Global Warming, ousted as President of Maldives. What's his legacy?

If Al Gore and Rajendra Pachauri are the high priests of global warming religion, Mohammed Nashed was undoubtedly  its poster boy.

In a way, the phenomena of Nashed come across as a whiff of fresh air in the governance history of Maldives. There is no getting away from the fact that he brought back democracy to Maldives. Nashed was jailed in all for six years after being arrested 27 times while agitating for democracy. He remains the country's first and only democratically elected President. He additionally preserved the country's culture of liberal brand of Islam.

But governing Maldives was not easy. Nasheed's predecessor, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom who ruled as a dictator for more than 30 years, may have been defeated at the polls, but his chosen people continue to control all other institutions of the country whether the judiciary, police; army etc who collectively continued to put hurdles to his governance. This task was made worse when a small section of Islamist fundamentalists made him the object of their ire because of his liberal outlook. He played right into their hands when he took to undemocratic steps to curb his opponents. The ouster of Nashed from this perspective remains a blot to democracy. But make no mistake. Nashed will be back in the chair of Presidency, maybe sooner than later.

The latest in a series of major winter storms will dump heavy snow in areas from the Balkan Peninsula and Italy to North Africa early in the week.

Some of these same areas have already received deep, even immobilizing, accumulations of snow following last week's series of storms, which disrupted transportation infrastructure over a wide area. 

Snow has contributed to the weather-related death toll, since late January, of at least 300 people, most of them dying of cold exposure.

About 70,000 people in Serbia were still cut off in snow-bound villages, according to many recent reports. Some mountain areas in Algeria also remained isolated. 

Further disruptions to transportation by road, rail and air will take place. 

Through Tuesday, heaviest new falls of snow will hit eastern and southern Italy to the mountains and inland valleys of Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro. 

By Wednesday, a fresh foot of snow will cover some of these regions.

Hills above the coast in eastern Algeria and nearby Tunisia will also get new falls of snow.

Although the Mediterranean storm will weaken markedly Wednesday and Thursday, a new storm could form over the northwestern Mediterranean Sea late in the week, leading to even more falls of disruptive snow.

Whats with this Severe Cold ?
Temperatures dipped to bitter levels once again this morning from the Low Countries where Amsterdam fell to -10C (14F) to -40C/F over the Finnish Interior. Germany shivered in their coldest morning in quarter of a century with -29.1C (-20F) on the Baltic Sea Island of Usedom, even mainland Germany shivered to -28C (-19F).
